Alright...help me pick out a MMORPG to play

Postby Dokujisan » Fri Mar 02, 2007 11:17 pm

Nexuiz takes care of my need for fast-paced action and strategy, but I need something to take care of my needs for adventure. I played D&D as a kid and it was fun. I keep hearing different things about MMORPG's and I have yet to try one out. I keep putting if off because I don't want to waste my time with one that sucks. :-(

I liked playing regular Warcraft game, so I could imagine getting into the MMO version. However, I've heard some bad things about it. Some have told me that Everquest II is better. There is also Guild Wars which I think only charges you once for the game and you don't have to pay monthly fees (could be wrong about that).

Then there is the upcoming Warhammer MMO, which looks pretty interesting. Looks pretty vicious.

Eve Online looks a bit sci-fi. I'm more into the LOTR-style of RPG.

Speaking of...there is the LOTR MMO, which is in beta. Based on what I read on Digg, it's evidently just like a copy of WoW with a LOTR theme. Not sure if that would interest me or not.

So... help me out here. Anyone here have any experience with any MMOs?

I don't play mmos. it's like working. you actually do the same crap over and over when you're a newb. that's why I have a runscape account but never use it and I'm still level 3. Plus I can't have a name over 16 characters long so I have to leave out a letter, making me look stupid (my aim screenname is 'psyciccyberfreak'), or I have to abbreviate it (like as psycybrfrk). so mmos are dumb. for me anyway.

I play Final Fantasy XI and it's quite fun. Been playing it for two years this summer. I've tried Eve too and it's also very fun, mostly for me because it's space and I love games like that. But unfortuanly there isn't much to do in Eve, it's either mining, doing missions or free game, where you either just cruise or kill other players. (There might be more stuff to do, but my friends who play it never gave me any more things which could be done).

Also tried WoW a bit too, it's lot like FFXI but in a different style which different things. And because it's so new it has a few more goodies that FFXI don't have (like the ability to jump). But if you go for LOTR then I'd say WoW (more) or FFXI (less) are the best options. FFXI is more of "realistic" fantasy/magic game than LOTR's orcs, hobbits etc. I've tried some other few more but those don't really qualify as MMO. Never tried Guild Wars so cannot say anything about that.

So that's what my say in this matter is :) I think it all also boils down to what you like, I for instance like Final Fantasy more than Warcraft so or course I would play FFXI. Oh and if you plan on playing FFXI I might supply you with a Worldpass so that you'll end up on the same server as me. One cannot choose the servers as one can (I think) in WoW.

Cool. Thanks for the feedback. I haven't heard of Final Fantasy XI - MMO before.

My experience with MMORPG's:

Found Runescape, solved basic quests, got killed, quit.

Found SecondLife... erm... i'm still trying to figure out what to do...

I love Nexuiz.

I tried Second Life, and realized after a couple of hours that there is no point at all. Its basically a 3d chat room. Weird. :|

I'm not interested in second life at all, but I do understand the point of it. I've heard people talk about it before. The attraction is that it allows you to create a fantasy life. The difference is that this fantasy life is more similar to real life than something like World of Warcraft where there are orcs and whatever. In second life, you can buy a prostitute and get all of the thrills of doing that without getting in trouble. You can start a business and not have to worry about losing money in real life. You can build a house of your dreams. You can be cool if you are not cool in real life, etc. I get it, even though I don't fully relate. I would prefer that if I'm doing that whole "fantasy life" thing that it actually be considerably different than real life... like the World of Warcraft world.

I dunno... I also saw my nephew playing second life and the 3D quality wasn't impressive. Maybe if they improve the client architecture (they did just open source the client a month or two ago) then the quality will improve and make it more interesting.

Oh...and people have real businesses in second life also...where they make money in real life.

Runescape.

Nah, just kidding  .

I have no idea. I'm not big on RPG's since I don't have the time or patience required for all that grinding.
