World or Padman

Postby PHREAK » Tue May 08, 2007 5:37 pm

Hey guys,
I'm guessing this isn't news to many of you but as I haven't found a post mentioning it, I figured I'll start one.

The Q3 mod "World of Padman" just recently went standalone as is available as a DL.

For those who don't know the game, well it's kinda quirky.
The core of the game is DM and team DM.
However, the way the game was visually done is quite different from todays norm.
It's very "cartoony" and light hearted. Maps are mostly domestic enviroments (bedrooms, kitchens, etc) and VERY colorful.
Weapons are quite interesting and the game runs extremly well even on lower end systems and the netcode is a beauty.

The official wep site is: http://www.worldofpadman.com

Like I said, it's very light hearted and can be quite fun, but it's not really a competitive style game. Also, servers are not very populated ATM, but thats to be expected from a brand new release.

Let me know what you guys think.

The production of this game is about as good as it gets, and not even just for freeware. Ente is a top-notch artist, and it really shows in the game.

Love the weapons and weapon FX. It is also alot of fun to play.

My only complaint was, that by default, the maps are *way* too dark, and i had to disable something to get the brightness to work right. Otherwise, not much else to complain about. It's smooth, fun, and very different.

Yeah WOP really looks nice but somehow its too similar to quake3.. all the guns seem to be very similar, all the movement too put i'm sure its a nice change from typical FPS games :)

WOP is pure FUN!

I have it installed on my hd as a q3 mod. I can remember dm plays when I had to stop once in a while, couse I was laughing so hard I could not aim :) Strange, but the fellow players were shaking their models too :P

The game mod that I really like is the SYC, meaning "spray your color".
It's a version of DM but with a nice twist.
As you frag people, they drop paint canisters. You collect them and have to go to the spray room and tag a wall with those to redeem points for your frags.
Twist is, if you get killed while carrying a few canisters, you lose them and anyone can pick them up and steal your frags.
Also, you can enter the spray room with one canister but the more you spray at once, the more bonus points you get so there is a balance. Risk gathering too many and be fragged thus lose them all or go spray as soon as you get one or two.

I like this idea and it's nicely different from other more serious DM style FPS games.
Also, I love the colorful, bright maps and fuzzy characters of WoP. While it might play similar to Q3 or UT, it feels different due to the look and environments.

Quite a cool game IMO.

I've purposely been avoiding it until the semester ended.

I'll probably download it tomorrow.

WOP has been around for a very long time now (starting as a q3mod), and i always loved the Liliput-maps with all the traps and secret places.

You should definitely give this a try!

Heh thats the headhunter mod from quake1. After each frag you had to collect the heads of your poor opponents and bring them to an altar. You could collect more then just one head and got more points then. Unless someone fragged you and took your heads :)
