So... Can't get Quake II to run

Postby kozak6 » Tue May 29, 2007 4:14 am

I ran across Quake II today for $2. Figured it was about time to fully enjoy it, as my old computer choked on it and I never made any appreciable progress.

Anyways, when I throw the disc in (running Win XP Home, btw), all I get is this:

So, I'm not quite sure what to do. I tried updating DirectX, I clicked that "Reinstall DirectX" button, I mumbled angrily at the computer, and nothing worked.

Any suggestions?

Its strange that the 'Primary Display Driver' has a version of 0.00.00.0000 and no status at all. Maybe you should reinstall the latest ati/nvidia drivers and then try reinstalling the latest directx version.. Though Q2 should not need directx at all just the opengl stuff from the ati/nvidia drivers :)

Theres a dx setup on the q2 disc? that would be a almost fosilized version :D dont run it.. if it startes messing arround with your mutch newer dx install it will proly breakt it. badly. You can proly bypass the dx install stepp somehow, q2 should run just fine.

edit:
Just checked, i do indeed try to install some dx setup. just abort that and run setup.exe form the cd rootdir insted.
HOF:
<Diablo> the nex is a "game modification"
<Diablo> quake1 never had a weapon like that.
<Vordreller> there was no need for anything over 4GB untill Vista came along
<Samua>]Idea: Fix it? :D

Quake 2 did have an OpenGL rendering path available as well as a software renderer. I would suggest you try Quake 2 Evolved which is an engine mod of Quake 2 in a similar (but less developed) way as Darkplaces is a mod of Quake.

oddly enough quake II runs better with a software renderer then hardware GLX. Must be the drivers. Time to re-install stuff.

Anyways try running it with SDL as well if you haven't allready.

Damnit.

I had a really awesome post with some QII gifs I found, and it got eaten.

Anyways, I managed to install it. It turns out that I wasn't mumbling angrily enough.

Seriously, though, tZork got it. Did it that way, and it installed fine. Thanks! :P

I played it for 30 seconds, and it seemed to run well enough. The volume controls on my keyboard resulted in a rather interesting psychedelic color effect.

Are there any cool mods or other things I should check out? Should I be ashamed for beating the N64 version before the pc version?

I'd prefer the gladiator bot, worths a try.
Imho the best mod for quake two ever is the 3wave CTF that ships with the point release (you might already have it installed, my legal cd is patched too). And yes, I mean it, that's the best CTF mod ever (even beat's nexuiz's ctf).
Catch the chicken is ver good too, but you'll need some friendy to play it.
On of the best is Coop or Die. This is a cooperative mod, but online, and a master server is always running (tho I've never met anyone, but corpses indicated that I've missed them only by a few minutes :( ).
Once I've found a good cooperative bot for quake2 (as quake 2 was ment to be played imho), but I've forgot it's name sorry :(
