Increase in trolls?

Postby TVR » Sun Jun 17, 2007 3:42 am

Nexuiz, as we all know, is renowned for having an extremely friendly community supporting it.

However it seems like with the increase in North American players since 2.0, the number of absolutely sadistic trolls/griefers has also risen,
and the current tools are not adequate to deal with emerging problem complicated with the influx of clueless people and erratic playing schedules of current moderators.

So the question, what should the Nexuiz community do about it?

I have a question. What the hell is a sadistic trroll, or a griefer?

A Troll/griefer is someone who plays just to ruin the experience of others.

Sadistic means, taken from Wiktionary '...someone who delights in the pain of others'... as of 07:46 GMT, 16/06/07.

Why is this attributed to "American" players only? Where is the data that backs this up?

I don't get what your poll options are supposed to help in whatever case.

Here's the solution, if there's a troll on Fusion, I ban them. I really don't think it's such a big problem either, I've only had to get rid of xsax, fake xeno, and mikee

about the erratic playing schedules of moderators as you said, most of the server admins are on IRC, so if there's really a problem, just get on #nexuiz on quakenet and let someone know what your problem is.

I think the only new option that would probably help with this problem would be a player-registration-system where ppl need to register, put their account-data in their nexuiz-config and servers can enforce that.

BUT: that is MUCH work for only 5-6 players that really need to be banned. and some of them even come back when they are banned from this board (register new email, new account and play again).
so even such a system would not work as seen with "Steam" for example. That's because Nexuiz needs no CD-Key which need to be bought.

the other point is: who decides if someone is a troll and needs to be banned from such a user-system? perhaps a voting-system? but how to harden it against misuse?

This has been brought up a few times before, and I think it's a terrific idea. Of course, it would be completely optional for the server admins if they want to use registered accounts or not. I think this could spawn the next evolution of Nexuiz, where teams in CTF can be balanced based on their skill from past games.

Well, that's up to the server admin. They can disallow a user's account if they want based on their moderation preferences. It's their server. Of course, users can re-register if they want to, just like with most forums. It follows under the same banning methods used by forum admins.

I think it's a great idea, but I don't have any idea of the complexity of implementing it in the current Nexuiz code.

I like the idea of player mods more than the rest of them. Seems a sensible solution- choose someone who you believe will use the power responsibly, and who plays often enough, and they can ban/mute trolls or griefers. Registration seems to me like one more thing that can cause problems. My 2cents.
