on Linux, the fonts and graphics sometimes seem to be between the pixels, whereas on Windows they seem to be dead-on.

I must say, that's the most ridiculous thing I've heard in awhile, and I make a point of listening to ridiculous things.

It sounds like you've used Linux on an LCD with a misconfigured resolution. With different font-smoothing algorithms, it's certainly possible for fonts to be "between pixels" in the antialiasing or cleartype sense. But to have graphics "between pixels" sounds like a misconfigured LCD.
