Sauerbraten VS darplace

Hi there, there is a interesting thread in the sauerbraten Thread, where somebody wants to do a enemy territory clone and searches a engine for that.

Darkplace is realy losing in that thread, i try to defend it as a normal user and not as a dev, perhaps some technical stuff would help the discussion there :-)

Well, it's not a matter of darkplaces winning or loosing, each engine has it's own distinct features. Yes, there is the argument that there would be more people working on one engine or the other, but if the cube engine is more suited for what they want to do, let them use it.

But I would like to see some good points made in there. I'd hate to see them just pick the cube engine because "it's cool" :D

Since it is for an ET clone, the biggest pro for darkplaces is, that you can use maps made for ET with it...

you can do games with cube engine ?!??
I thought it was a tech demo to show how to make everything shiny

Cube IS a technical demo to entice commercial development, it is why Wouter van Oortmerssen, the main developer, refers to it as the 'Cube engine'.

Darkplaces is an indoor engine in the same lieu as the Quake engines, as it is intended for indoor maps; the Cube engine is an outdoor engine due to the Octo-space partition, 6 directional world height maps, the general cubeness, and the traditional inability to do room-over-room.

Darkplaces has quite a few advantages due to similarity to Tech 3, but it isn't a terrain engine.

Cube [engine] may be a terrain engine, but interactive entity is sub-par as of now.

The best engine I can think of would be the Torque.

how stuppid is that to make a clone of a mod. ET is already free. and it is the most stinky game of these time , the hacks are to good
and every thing cube2 can do can darkplaces x100 bether

ET has a big hacking comuniity. who need that ? its bether to keep darkplaces hidden for those $%#%#

so in this case saubraten is bether let them handle the problems that can happen when ET comunity finds out that there is a port to the game for cube.

I have to agree, way too much cheating goes on in ET. I guess they started the effort b/c they like ET's style of play, but ET:QW seems to be more like battlefield now.
