But those were crippled by limited modability and extremely poor graphics. Even Creatures (where Spore probably got the idea of cross pollination) is limited because you only have three creature species. Though their method of reproduction was ingenious.
Spore... had so much potential to be a really great AL game. But I was sorely disappointed in the creature stages and higher because it severely limits you.
I had visions of a fully functioning ecosystem, where the creatures roam free and you can basically go anywhere you want. Only to find out that creatures don't behave like creatures at all. They all stay in the same nests. In a word... boring.

The tidal pool stage was awesomely fun though! LOL. If only it went on for longer.

The only thing I can hope for now, is that someone take the core ideas of the game and make an opensource better clone out of it. AL hasn't been getting a lot of attention from developers asides from Maxis. And theirs is commercially driven and thus not really suited for serious AL enthusiasts.
I wished for a game that can emulate ecosystems and evolution. And Spore, though fun at the beginning and still tickles my creativity, wasn't it.
