Forum sort, forgot password, 2.5 avatar height/width, etc

Postby xyz123 » Mon Apr 20, 2009 9:51 am

Ok, I'm gonna gripe... I'm not looking for debate. Then I'll get to a 3rd party map anomaly.
Yes, maybe I should write things down, but yes maybe the forum software could be 'friendlier'... others are. (Btw... newly set up on a notebook, 'cause desktop mobo died, so... I don't have all the data I could access on the ol' hard drive... gotta rebuild first. Anyone know a good, cheap, external drive =case=?? (empty))

#1) Ok... Forgot logon. And... can't remember username... but I do have a mental formulaic password generator, so it usually only takes me a couple/three tries to guess a password ...usernames, however, can get to be a hassle... this many characters, no special characters, have to have letters -and- numbers, gotta have a special character, only alphanumeric, gotta have caps, case insensitive... varies from site to site, yes... I've a few 'standards' but apparently not available to me here.

So, I go to "Forgot password"... lo and behold, it not only asks for email address, it demands username. To be sarcastic... what is this, a memory test??? Why isn't the email address enough?? Is there some other User at my email address?? Or (to seem redundant) two Users with the same email address?? I can't remember my username... I tried several variations of what I normally use. Maybe you've "retired" my username... so... I re-register with a different email address... because 'forum' won't let me re-register with main email address... yes, it's already in the database!!! Duh. I would plead for forum administrators, nexuiz owners, who'sever in charge.... make 'Forgot password' require Username ...OR... email address... -not- both, huh? Preferably email address, if only one of the above.

#2) Re-registered spiffy brand new nonsensical name... 'cause I still wanna use my original, if I can get it back... but... can't remember that one associated with my still-in-the-database primary email. Was gonna search the "memberlist"... by 'Username'... and I'd have it!!! Hey, there's only 51 pages. You know how it works? 1, 2, 3.... 49, 50, 51. Where're the pages I want to find? You guessed it... somewhere in the middle. Can we say... Page Down, position mouse over "3", click.... pagedown, over "4", click... PD, "5", click... PD, "6", click... PD, "7", click... PD, "8", click... PD, "9", click... You get the idea. Because... there's no "Goto" (page #) entry box (or I'm too tired to see it). Where do I end up... page 30-something, should have started from the back and paged backwards. Old username? Something starting with ' R '?? Not there. email address in database. username?? uh, no...

So, maybe forum software could find a way to Goto a page or make scrolling the page numbers easier?? Oh... limited by the forum package you're using... yes.

Ok... flame on. Why don't I have Roboform? Why don't I....blahblahblah ? Because I gotta lotta passwords and a mental formula that works everytime within 2 or 3 tries.... or... there's "Forgot password" ...so why bother with yet another software? Don't need it. Usually 'Forgot password' is gracious enough to email (only) and say "Oh, Mr. (Username here)... here's your password or how to reset it."

#3) Came to read detail about Nexuiz 2.5 changes... 'cause I have used the "minimanq3" map in 2.4.2... and, in 2.5... seems we put on a little weight, and grew up to be a bigger boy... 'cause now in minimanq3 on 2.5... have to 'crouch' to slide under shelves that used to just run under... can't go at all between furniture legs and 'baseboard' anymore... too fat I guess. Makes a difference when you put the bots in 'god mode' and need to get outta the line of fire... fast. 2.5 bots are less predictable... ver' nice.
Plus I forgot the bot skill command in 2.4.2... doesn't jump out at me in 2.5 command/var list. (Me ol' hard drive not accessible right now.) Had a keybind.

Ok, it's late and I've whino'd enough... so I'll look inta the height/width later. Gotta go write down this username. :P

That was my first impression. But I wasn't 100% sure, and after reading it for a while and trying to comprehend for 5 min what the hell was going on, I came to the conclusion that this isn't spam or anything like that.
This isn't even close the what mike usually posts so deleting this would be discrimination ;P

Anyway. He just complained about the login and forgot password thing. I do agree a bit that both username and email is unnecessary, but hey, that's how some forums work.
Also, one could ask an admin to restore a lost password, but I suppose one would have to prove that they were who they said they are (or telling the email only). And losing username is a bad thing in that case :P

If you PM me the email address you used for your previous account, we can help you. Like this, we can't.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

Green Marine... Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit ...but I think in your case, you do. Thanks a bunch. (Translation: "Neither is there anyone who loves grief itself since it is grief and thus wants to obtain it".).

"that's just how some forums work"... but it doesn't have to be (unless you choose the wrong forum software). If a person forgets their password, it's likely the username goes with it... if life doesn't revolve around the particular forum... can't use the same username everywhere. For password recovery, email address is direct, goes to the right person... username not needed (unless (especially) ya fergot that too, which is why many, many forums include username when responding to 'forgot password's).

4m ...I hear ya. Then there's the logons that won't take numbers or less than x characters.

"Sorting by username/join date now available at the bottom of the member page."

Uh, I did sort by username... but that still doesn't help me get to the R's or page 30-something any faster than... page by tedious page. You can get to page 1, 2, 3, 50, 51, and 52 fast... the rest you gotta dig... click, click click.

"If you PM me the email address you used for your previous account, we can help you. Like this, we can't."

Ummmm, you just did. Thanks... that's helpful.

So.... No one has info on avatar/minimanq3 height/width? Maybe I'll try picking a 'smaller' avatar? Do they actually vary in height/width/weight now? They got "age" listed too, but I don't see that affecting ability.

The problem with comm nowadays... everybody's a critic. You can't throw anythying out in cyberspace without a putdown. But.... I will admit... it was a GRIPE... which I so labeled. :P

Converting forum software to forum software requires some damn good middleware and is usually not considered a walk in the park but ignoring that fact, the newer version is planned but who knows how that handles such a stupid little thing.

if you looked at your address bar, you'd see it uses get requests >> &start=2450 << replace the number there could help you fast forward.

but crappy forum software is crappy forum software.
