Because we don't want to read the crap they (you) post any more and because we do not want this forum to be full of shit?

Trash is for threads considered point/sense/meaning-less by the admins.. also thread in here will get deleted automatically after a certain time without responses. It will help admins keep the forum a clean and fun place.
Its a forum about Nexuiz after all and not a place to bother people with nonsense.

The unfortunate side-effect of this is it may cause some members to try and make this a competition... but hehe... with advanced moderation tools in phpbb3, it'd be cool if the mods can write a tool to auto ban someone who's had X number of threads put in the trash for within a specific time period.

Taking a ride on the autoban...

I didn't elaborate this idea too much, but how feasible it could be to disallow posting from people using open http proxies ?

How to detect http proxies? You would need a list of tor nodes or something similar. And usually there are too many of them.

I think that making a sort of portscan on predefined ports (e.g: 80, 1080, 8080) could be a good start, of course the results of these scans (aka the blacklist) should be cached. I've spent about two minutes on google and found something like this but for irc. Maybe doing this check only when a post is received from users with less than, say 20 posts, should do the trick.

Besides its not a good idea to block tor nodes and such, because tor is just gonna get bigger and people are going to use it more. After all a growing list of country's, snoop on their citizens being on the internets. So its a bad message.

As for the trash subforum: it allows for a more aggressive policy against trolls. Threads moved there are not deleted, so moving a thread there is not comparable to censorship.

Basically, it allows moving a thread out of the normal forums with a much better conscience than if it would be deleted and some other people would think it wasn't bad enough for deletion yet.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

I get around irc servers that do that. Why even bother?
Most IRC servers have that, I just go and get proxies that don't make the cut :).
