I tried kde in kubuntu 9.10. It was nice at first, but I think I found a bunch of bugs, and my harddrives did not want to mount, so I went back to ubuntu and had no issues. :P

KDE 4.x fails, the only KDE that even worked slightly well was 3.x -- And that looks ugly now.. Basically: KDE sucks. WMII/Awesome/Gnome ftw
Do it yourself, or stop complaining.

I really like KDE 4.3 and run it on my system under Arch Linux using the kdemod builds. 4.0 and 4.1 didn't have feature parity with 3.5.11 but I don't find anything missing nowadays and the improvement in Konqueror is very noticable. I have tried Gnome and I hate it almost everything about it. Xfce I have also used quite a bit and while I find it worthwhile on lower powered systems, it simply doesn't allow me to get things done quicker. As a non-power user environment it's fine, even my mother uses it (also on Arch).

If you're stuck with 4.0-4.2 just because your distro is crap, change distro, not your desktop environment.
