making a magazine (4m is serious! RUN!!!!)

Postby The mysterious Mr. 4m » Wed Jan 27, 2010 2:25 pm

Summary: 4m is making a magazine. Helpers wanted. (there's no money, so no paid jobs, yet)

I know we all are quite busy doing stuff.... but i have a great idea! Let's do even MORE work! Long story short - no, let me start from the beginning:
So, i started buying Linux magazines (i'm using Linux solely now), but i was disappointed at the quantity, quality and content, so i decided to make my own magazine. I don't care for quality, if the content is interesting. But it wasn't, it was nerdy (but boring, too). So i decided to make my own. You know me, I don't like snotty elite stuff, but something enjoyable for the average Joe and Jolene, rather. The idea is a collaborative magazine done over the internet (just like Nexuiz! Wait, is Nexuiz a magazine?) about internet, computing, Nexuiz and the open source community. (At first, i wanted to do everything myself, but i couldn't come up with any content. One page of spam is funny, but ten?). Naming is a tough one. I've gone thru a long list of different names and reduced it to two: "Fresh IT" and "Prof.IT". You get the idea. (It should be "poppy", funny and interesting to kids and adults. Okay, maybe we need two magazines). Pick the one you prefer or submit a new name. Next task would be creating the website. I also want to ask any artist, cartoonist, musician to join in and submit their work. The DVD will include multimedia, if the magazine's ever going into print, that is. Would be cool, tho.
(mmmmh.... printed spam.... delicious!)

tldr = "too long, don't read" ---kind of rude, if you ask me, since your post was entirely not too long to read.

My response: great idea, but running a side thing to the forum is difficult I think. The developers seem to post here, we argue about stuff here...if this were a much larger community and a bigger company, and you had some great inside scoop on a lot of the things going on, it'd probably make more sense...but as far as Nexuiz concerns I figure this forum is where I'd find out about anything new...

As for open source, that seems to have a ton of blogs out there, are you sure somebody else isn't writing the kind of content you like?

Anyway, I don't want to sound discouraging. It's a cool idea. Especially if anybody else wants to contribute!

Did you take 4m's post for real? I mean, did you think that he is serious about that magazine?

If so, I could contribute with some more spam but I am not sure I am good enough at spamming. Especially not at spamming with large amount of contents. Only little bits of spam here and there, as the case may be. Occasionally I could come up with some more spam, but you never know when and I really have to be in the mood for it. It is not so easy to create content, even if it is "only" spam. Most probably I won't even live up to 4m's standards, as he is rather a high quality spammer from what I know. So I figure I'd better not contribute unless I practice my spamming skills a bit and reach a level where I can contribute with more than two lines of good quality spam.

Wait, were you being serious, 4m?

I'd prefer the name profit, because I like the sound of it. XoP

If i had written "I'm serious", would you have believed it? :P (Note that i removed "spam series" from the title.)

I didn't ask if this idea was new, i merely informed you what i was doing. There's still a lot of questions haunting in my head, so, i figured i'd just jump into the cold water and confront you people with it. I will probably buy a domain - no idea how i'm gonna pay for it - But even if it means i have to sell my butt for it, i'll do it! Hey! Maybe it's fun? Oh, and i forgot i already decided on the name in a late-nighter: Snowin' (what do you think?)

I figured a "Sorry for abusing the Alientrap forums like that" would be a little late, so, forget about that.

We (who is we?) even have a business plan:
1. find name
2. ????
4. PROFIT!!!!

(i'm aware that that business plan is not gonna work. We still need content.)

Edit: Yet more spam:
I expected people to be sceptical and look like :? , or  at first. Don't worry, it's okay, but that's why i need you.
Editedit: i don't really NEED you, it's just.... it would be a bit easier. And more fun! I'm just saying that so you don't feel overwhelmed with responsibility. Have content? Cool. Submit it and it may be included.

Well... I'd happily participate in the first item and the last item of your business plan. Not so sure about the rest, because I am not so good at question marks.

how about the name Dream.IT ?

Sounds like fun, anyway. Somehow this is such a crazy idea it might eventually make people smile (just like me at the moment).

Scared in my pants.... i must have been crazy!

Currently, i'm on the way of finding a solid financing (- had some setbacks). Things will start to roll when i have things settled. First, i wanted to come back crying "Boohoo, i'm sorry, i'm not gonna make it!" - but then i remembered: i'm very lazy.
