This is also what I object to. I do not mind if the developers try to make money out of the code they developed.

I do mind, however, if people make money out of a value (the name "Nexuiz") that they very little contributed to without giving back to those who contributed in turn.

Same here. I support the company using open source tech and hiring the hard-working developers. Keeping all the art they made is also completely fine, legally, morally and in any other way you want. They made it so why not? We as free users of Nexuiz can't complain when people who served us a very cool free FPS decide to get something out of it.

The core of the problem is taking over the Nexuiz name and identity. Even though they now have legal rights to use it, it feels completely wrong. Couple that with the fact some of the more prominent developers didn't know what was going on and the new company having indirect moderating rights of this forum, things even less prettier.

It's retarded, it's spelled wrong, no console-kiddies know about it, and it is ALREADY TAKEN THANK YOU VERY MUCH. Seriously, if you had made this announcement, but you had a slightly different name, you would have got a lot more "best of luck"'s and "wow cool"'s, and less angry mob with pitchforks.

Unfortunately, I tend to think that TVR is right, and that they want the name, not out of 'respect for the game' (mealy-mouthed politricks), but to cash in on the internet presence which has been built up by THE COMMUNITY. I wonder if we will get sued for referring to Nexuiz as Nexuiz, and not 'Nexuiz GPL'. What if I put 'nexuiz.torrent' on tpb, will (USA) downloaders get DMCA notices?

kehdrin and illphonic: For your own good and out of respect for the feelings of the community which makes this game commercially viable in the first place... change the name. Your game is not going to be a blockbuster, since very few console games really are. You are much better off with the support of this not insignificant (and internet savvy) community, helping to spread the hype. Otherwise, you may find yourself with more angry threads than you can lock.

The problem was always about the name.

Logic dictates that if they bought the name (and logo), they bought it for a reason. And that reason is that they didn't have the power to start a new game for console, so they had to link it to an existing known game, and I quote from an article: "Illfonic Brings Underground Arena FPS, Nexuiz to Console Gamers".

I repeat, I don't see how this project could benefit from the console version. It's obvious that nobody will play the free version if they already bought the console version.

Well the Console version is a console game... The PC fersion is a PC game, and its free. And why would one not play the free verison? Are yous aying that if you bought as CD, you would not listen to mp3s of the same album?

You are right about this, and I also tend to agree that the communication efforts, or lack thereof is.. troblesome.

This is, IMHO, a legitimate reason to be angry. If you don’t mind me asking, what did you contribute to the code or artwork? Was it a single model, a single map that is included with the GPL Nexuiz, a 2-line bugfix patch, or is it something more significant? Have you tried to contact Illfonic expressing interest in working for the company? I would be very pissed off if, for example, people who have made significant contributions to Nexuiz are given the “we need 10 years of experience with .NET to consider you for employment here” type of BS human resource departments give talented people.

I think we can make a stronger case that this is an issue if we can show which developers of GPL Nexuiz aren't getting any benefit from this change in direction. For example, Strahlemann, a very good map developer who has contributed a lot of excellent maps to Nexuiz. Was he told of Illphonic's takeover of the Nexuiz name? Has he been offered a job there as a mapper?

The issue with a large community project like Nexuiz is that it needs a lot of contributers and its ownership because somewhat nebulous.

Most of us, including me, has no work released and packed officially with Nexuiz. However, I can clearly state, we all put a lot effort and free time into this game over the years.
I can only speak for myself, so let's sum up my work with Nexuiz.
I've started playing when 1.0 hit the net. I instantly posted news translated into my native language to the since closed, but that time largest online multyplayer portal, mportal.hu , so I've helped the game to earn more publicity.
Soon I started mapping, and I might have failed with some of my projects, lot's of the most pupular maps on public ctf servers were created by me (Facing Worlds for Nexuiz, Space CTF, Greatwall RELOADED!).
Circa two years ago I got moderator rights on the forum. On heated situations I always tried to stay calm and tried to advice the same to everyone. As one who knows Nexuiz in and out, I tried to answer questions and offer solutions on the Support forum section.
Last year in Summer [-z-], esteel and me created the unfortunately discontinued "Fragest". It took almost two months for us to organise the event, and all in all I can say a lot of people had fun.
A few months ago I got admin and ssh rigths on one of Europe's most popular servers, the DCC servers. Since that I moderate the server, and whenever my time allows I try to upload new maps, fine tune the configs etc.
Also, fellow players know I'm quite light hearted, and I always have some fun surprise for everyone, let that be a new map from me, or a new ROFL sound pack.

Though I'm not even listed on the "We'd like to thank the following people" , I think I've played a major role in forming the game and the community we know today and relate to Nexuiz, and though that won't ear me any real life benefits (as my Father tends to say, it won't make bread cheaper), I'm still proud of it, what I and the whole community achieved during the last 4 years since Nexuiz exists.

And now, all the acceptance and the fame we earned, is taken over.
I'm just heartbroken, and very angry.

So no, I haven't contributed anything to Nexuiz and Alientrap.
