Do you remember me posting about G.ho.st about 2 or 3 years ago? It was a web-based service now referred to as "cloud computing". Their reason for shutting down the service is Google's Chrome OS. I'm posting this, because Shoe asked if "anything ever truly disappear[ed] from the Internet". Yes, it does, all the time. My old site: http://www.geocities.com/amoebios - gone. Not by my doing (or undoing) but because the provider decided to stop the service. (It's a more complex issue about several free webhosts disabling their free services because of too much abuse.)

Sure, there's the Archive and you can still find my site there (partially), but the Archive is not a wiki or search engine - lost information is lost. And making something open-source doesn't protect it from dust and oblivion.

That's sad to hear, I knew many geocities sites... all gone? That's very sad.

Though I personally find that everything Oblivion has touched so far turned out so good I wouldn't say anything needed protection from him in the first place. 8)
<Community>: Why was the name "Nexuiz" licensed to IllFonic in a way that allows IllFonic to use the name without any suffix or subtitle for a commercial console game?

Oh, I remember back in the day...
Gather around youngens and lemme tell you a story from the time when ol' clippy wasn't even bent properly.

Aye ...
..
Where was I?
Oh... in those days, when one could find all kinds useful information on geocities. Quake 1 stuff for an example. (last FPS I played before Nexuiz btw)
I mean we used Netscape and that email application what was it now? Aye... Eudora. That was some good shit for windows that is.
...
.
But yes, it was usually on these sites that gave you eyecancer with their... lets say generous colours.

Yeah, they are all gone now. Who knows what kind of useless/useful information was lost there. :?

If some time in the future you need to find something that you know used to be on a geocities site, maybe the Wayback Machine saved it during their huge effort last year:

Is soemthing lost on the internet?

Oh yeas, indeed.

The ratio of informarion that is kept compared to waht is made is getting worse and worse. Especially since the "youth" of today has no reagard for keeping any information. Just consuming it.

I deleted my maps. I took my balls and went home. You can't have them anymore.

That's okay, we didn't want your maps anyway.
