Buying a new mouse!

Postby PHREAK » Thu Jul 27, 2006 7:49 am

Hey guys,
My MX510 is starting to shit the bed and I'm shopping for another so I need some expert help.

Since cordless is out of the question for me, I'm juggling between G5 and MX518.

Like I said, I have a MX510 and the 2 side buttons are kinda important to me. While the MX518 is similar, G5 has only one side button but it features the on-the-fly sensitivity thingy-whatchamacallit.

Anywho, let me know what to get, you oh-so-wise-nex-community.
I expect Stahl or Tchr to respond first. Don't dissapoint now, masters of the forun universe :P

Neither. MX400 instead. I have one and it's very good. Before that I had an MX500. DIdn't like it as much because it had more stupid buttons on it. Who needs stupid buttons?

Well I use the "stupid" buttons all the time for image editing and various other things, including gaming. MX400 is just so light....too light for my taste.
The buttons are there for u to program and set to what you want them to do so it's kinda handy if you really are going to use them. If not, they are a waste of speacial button plastic used to make mouse buttons....something like that.

You said the MX400 was so light for you. So you'd better take the MX518 in hands before you take it. It might look much heavier than it is in fact. I use a cheap MX310 at work and the MX518 at home. I can't help myself, the MX310 is more comfortable to me. I wish there was a mixture of both, 310's body and 518's technique :?

Oh, another thing you should maybe have in mind is that the glidepoints get worse and worse the newer the model is. Really disappointing. Not the G5 where teflon is used.

I think I can also anticipate esteel's and tChr's point of view: why not try a razer. I never had one, but it seems they go byebye very soon.

Don't get me wrong, copperhead is a great mouse...for gaming. It's a tad lighter then I like and the do go kaput fairly quickly, at least according to some people.

@ urmel

Is the MX518 is the same weight as the MX510 or lighter?

I've heard good things about Logitech, not sure which one is best for you though.

I would certainly advise anyone thinking of getting any M$ related hardware to think twice. I have bought 4 keyboards and mouse sets from them over the years and they have all left something to be desired. Their build quality has severely deteriorated over the recent years, although it was never great to begin with.

I currently have yet another wireless desktop - Wireless Optical Desktop Elite. The best thing about it is probably the name lol.

http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/productdetails.aspx?pid=016

Despite having the receiver right next to the keyboard the signal doesn't always get though when typing or playing. There's no other device interfering. Some of the larger keys (SHIFT) are far too stiff and require pressing directly in the middle to even work. All the keys are extremely hard compared to other keyboards I've used, both M$ and non-M$. The keys are semi-transparent (frosty in appearance) however all you see is the bloody dust clogged inside the keyboard which means I probably need to clean it again. :) It also has the stupid F-Lock key which isn't remembered each time I boot Windows or Linux and doesn't use the standard F-keys by default, irritating as hell. :( The fancy silver media keys wear away in no time - the symbols and colour dissolves easily.

The mouse is erratic at times with sudden anomalous movement and doesn't always fire when I tell it to (that's my excuse for not playing Nexuiz well at least :)). The mouse wheel is extremely sensitive and feels like jelly, it doesn't have any tactile or auditory feedback such as clicking on the wheel notches - it's entirely smooth action. It's a nightmare in games whereby I simply can't use it anymore. The middle mouse button is incredibly rigid where you must apply a dangerous amount of force to even use it. There's also a useless mouse wheel on the keyboard as well. :D

Both mouse and keyboard are creaky and squeaky, especially the keyboard. The keyboard requires 3 batteries now instead of only 2 and only lasts 2/5 as long as the last M$ wireless keyboard battery lifetime. The mouse is very light without batteries but is much heavier with two alkaline batteries that M$ recommends. Rechargeable don’t last any where near as long and are annoying when they fail in the middle of a match – I then quickly take the dead keyboard batteries out and exchange them with the mouse batteries just so I can type “arrrrrrrh no bleeding batteries” and then charge them for the next hour or two. :)

All-in-all, I don't think I’ll be recommending M$ mouse and keyboard duos even to my worst enemies (I first have to find some enemies :)).

I hope I wasn’t too unhelpful un-venting my frustration, lol. Now I think I’ll go look for another M$ set so I can have many more countless hours of fun again. :D Someone please shoot me.

I think you're askin about the MX310 (not 510? or 500?). It's not lighter than the MX518, but it's not that precise. The MX510 looks completely similar to the MX518, I really have no idea where's the difference. Anyway, the MX510 is not available anymore (according to germany).

Still it appeals to me better for its body form, and the two side buttons are left and right, not like the MX518 who has both on the left side (my thumb starts hurting after playing a while). Last not least sometimes it's great if you can change the mouse from the right to the left side. Forget about that with the MX518.

On the other side the MX518's body has a smooth and handy surface, while the MX310 has edges and the pure plastic body is slippery when your hand sweats. The MX500's body is alike the MX518, so you may get used to it better than me??

@GDI+
why are u buying microsoft stuff, and why are u using cordless M$ stuff for gaming???

I have no direct experience with the mx518, I went from a mx510 to a G5 to a Razer Diamondback.

The mx518 is just a mx510 with a higher resolution sensor. Same bad/tiny teflon feet.
The G5 has nice, large teflon feet, and the weight is nice since you can make it really heavy. The lack of the forward mouse button on the thumb is really annoying to me. Also, the mouse wheel and side scrolling is very tough to master while the mouse isn't broken in. You'll get a lot of mouse wheel up or downs while trying middle click. I generally found side scrolling useless, but thats just me... it doesn't really belong on a gaming mouse imo. The on-the-fly sensitivity is quite a handy feature though.

Personally, I've adjusted well to my Razer, though I did really like my MX510, and the only thing Logitech likes to keep the same with its mice is the shape these days ;p

Two I'd recommend:
Copperhead (even better if there was any noninvasive way to disable those %#^ blinkenlights). Very light, fingertip-only mouse. I use this one at home. "Put your paw on me and I will bite you. Stroke me with your fingertips and I will purr." sums up the ergonomics...

Logitech MX400, very good allround mouse, can use either fingertip grip or whole hand equally well, so good for variation. I use it at work. Also, quite light, but easy enough to open up and glue weights to the inside if desired. The wheel tilt function is useless, but isn't mechanically disturbing if not bound to any actions. Their best mouse since the venerable MouseMan Wheel PS/2 IMO,
Whenever You go, then You aren't.
