Looking for a new graphics card. Suggestions?

Postby kozak6 » Thu Jul 27, 2006 9:36 am

Yeah, this thread again. Sorry.

Figure it's about time to update due to some recent issues.

I'm restricted to an AGP slot, and am looking to pay something like $100-$150.

What might you suggest? And for further reference, what exactly should one look for in a graphics card?

What unit of currency is that? It makes a lot of difference.

As you're here on the Nexuiz forum, an nVIDIA card makes the most sense for Nexuiz.

7600's on AGP are coming out now. Have a Google and you'll see mentions of them but few are actually for sale. There is a GS and a GT, as with PCI-E, and they're the same clocks. The 7600GS AGP will finally allow nVIDIA to kill off the much loved 6600GT and the 7600GT AGP will match a 7800GS AGP (a funny card) and will cost less, is smaller, uses less power, runs cooler, is quieter...

Take a look at the Leadtek models on their site, haven't seen them actually selling anywhere yet, the only ones I've seen selling here are Club 3D cards for £84. Whatever, now is not the right time to buy one as they're in limited numbers and you should really wait for the prices to settle down and for reviews to be written saying which one is the best to get. 2 months time.

The currency is American dollars. Oops.

Also, how complicated is it to install a graphics card? Is it something that I can do myself?

Thanks again.

nah, not a big deal. But if you do it for the first time, maybe get a friend who did it already.

Graphics cards are easy, you just pop out the current one, plug the new one in (some of them require extra power from a molex connector to power the fan; make sure you pay attention to see if it does - you just have to plug an extra cable into it if need be) and then boot up and install the drivers.
