I love tabs in browsers. I'm using Opera and I can't realize how I'd surf the net without it and mouse gestures.
But Nexuiz isn't a browser. ;-) In my opinion, the typical ("normal") game menu just looks better. And again it's a matter of taste.
As for protecting the flag carrier.. I think thats good because protecting the flag carrier should be part of CTF.. however on good maps its basicly impossible to do that via camping, one has to go with the flag carrier and >I< think thats good as its TEAMPLAY!
But I don't mean that other gamers play protective for FC, but himself plays protective. It doesn't affect in any way the teamplay - human nature is egoistic, typical gamer isn't interested in actuall flag carrier life and score (or better - he is interrested, in this sense, that he [gamer] want to FC die). And it won't change with negative points for flag carrier. It would change only, if all guys from one team get negative points when flag carrieer from this team looses the flag. Yeah, guys, it's amazing idea for you! It will increase cooperation in team, don't you think? :-)
It's irony of course. I'm sure, that negative points for anything (except killing teammate, if FF is on) are bad.
