Nexuiz News #2 2009.04.09.

Postby esteel » Thu Apr 09, 2009 1:49 pm

Hi and welcome to the second issue of Nexuiz News, the double N post that eases your hunger towards the fresh happenings in WoN ! (World of Nexuiz).

Sadly C.Brutail only did one, seems to not have found time for more and since i was recently asked on irc about the near future of Nexuiz i did take the chance to do followup of the first Nexuiz News. So lets get it done:

Development
For those, who are not familiar with the development of Nexuiz: as we know, Nexuiz is and open source game, and the development is rather fluent, and SVN commits are pretty regular. The SVN commit log can be found at:

http://svn.icculus.org/twilight/trunk/darkplaces/
http://svn.icculus.org/nexuiz/trunk/

The usual 'readable for everyone' collection of changes in the file
Code: Select all
changes-since-last-release
is not yet updated so you will have to make sense of the commit messages themself. But that should not be that hard. If something is unclear, just ask :)

There seems to be some consensus about a bugfix release in the near future. Maybe close to the beginning of next month.
People should feel free to let the devs know about found bugs or feature request on the official tracker: http://nexuiz.com/bugs (Please note that this link takes you to the BUG tracker, select Tracker/Features if you want to summit a feature request. Also please use the search function on sourceforge to keep doublicates low)

Current changes include several fixed memory leaks, a improved map loading screen that displays a progress bar and the name of the currently loading item, secure encrypted rcon protocol, slightly lowered CPU usage and a few crashes in the engine. Maybe (!) a cause of bad behavoir on packetloss was also fixed today. As for Nexuiz itself we have support for secure rcon in the rcon and rcon2irc tools, several small bug fixes, Tenshihan'S new sounds, better display of strength and shield running out, bot improvements and faster loading of bots via cached waypoints, weaplast was fixed

This might sound like adverticing, but to help the devs get more feedback from changes in the development code please play on the CTF CTF CTF 2.5 NO HOOK CTF, CTF Herforst 2.5 Elgefhsnegolrb, {}Race Over the Lazy Dog 2.5 {X} (well Lazy dog in general!) and Planetnexuiz.de server which are activly updated and monitored by the developers. Also often they are available via messages if you found a problem. If not, try the bug tracker or just jump on irc or this forum.

Community Buzz:

With the new release we got quite a few new people in the forum. A warm and friendly welcome to all those! Hope you feel at home and have fun learning new stuff, getting an idea about this friendly community and that you are trying to get fellow friends to also play and spread Nexuiz :-)

Still, the release is quite new. There have been posts on some important news sites like slashdot, ESport-Reality and Digg. But lets not stop there. If you know some open source, gaming, computer, graphics related forum or news site, feel free to drop them a mail, telling them about this great release and let the world know about it. Maybe even old players that will willcome this change.

If you want to keep uptodate please see this thread about a release mailing list: http://forums.alientrap.local/viewtopic.php?t=839

I'm sure linux distributions will catch on sooner or later. Some like GetDeb already have. Again please let such sites and people know about the current release so people can enjoy Nexuiz 2.5 with the usual ease of installing an app they are used..

Lets take a look at some cool stuff happing in the community itself.

Tenshihan has release some great and cool sound works: Tenshihan's GPL Soundbank (v1.0) = RELEASED.

FruitieX has done a awesome new video for the nexuiz homepage: http://nexuiz.com

The Nexball modification is comming along nicely: Nexball Recoded, Beta 2 (for Nexuiz 2.5) !

Several new maps by enthusiastic mappers have been released: Nexuiz - Map Releases

AI is comming along nicely with his new model: The ai Frontier - My ups and downs

And while NetRadiant is now included with Nexuiz 2.5 (sorry, the sources for linux somehow got eaten by a bug in the package script) this is still the best link to get updated about NetRadiant: NetRadiant = Radiant 1.5 with useful q3map2 patches...

And finally a short funny hint from me: If you are using 2.5 and see no text in the 'gametype' column in the serverlist then its a old server.. Would be great to try and contact those admins and get them to update to 2.5! Do you wanna help? yes we can.. get them to switch :-)

So you see, a lot of stuff is happening, stay tuned and help so we have more great stuff to announce in the future.

This was the #2 of Nexuiz News! I hope you've enjoyed reading through the news, and I hope, we can finally get this out more regulary :-)

Indeed it is. It's nice to sit back and read what's been going on, especially if you aren't that involved in the community. Great source and great work!
