THIS FEATURE MUST BE USED IN MULTIPLAYER GAMES

Postby DeVsh » Thu Sep 06, 2007 8:00 pm

What I have noticed on XBox live Gears of War tm was that people can voice chat, THIS FEATURE MUST BE USED IN MULTIPLAYER GAMES. FOR F**K'S SAKE HOW MANY TIMES DID YOU GET FRAGGED WHEN YOU WERE TYPING A MESSAGE!?
THE THING WITH VOICE IS THAT YOU CAN EASLY COMMUNICATE EVEN IN INTENSE ACTION! NO ONE PLEASE TELL ME THAT XFIRE WILL DO BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO PRESS SCROLL + X AND THE INTERFACE COMES UP SO YOU CANNOT PLAY! THIS IDEA USES JUST FIVE KEYS F1, F2, F3, F4 AND THREE CHANNELS. F1 FOR CHAT WITH NEAREST PLAYER FROM YOUR TEAM, TO USE THE CHANNEL YOU DON'T HAVE TO HOLD DOWN THE KEY. F2 TEAM MESSAGE AND F3 FOR OVERALL MESSAGE. F4 TO SWITCH OFF VOICE SO PEOPLE DONT HEAR WHAT YOU SAY TO YOUR GIRLFRIEND OVER THE PHONE.

The thing could be done using VoIP if possible if not, DirectInput (in programs like videoLAN) in MPEG-4 at 1 or 2 KiloByte/s (bytes not bites), it will work cause I was listening to the radio 56k/s and playing a game in multiplayer. To minimise host's bandwitch usage the audio would be sent directly to other peoples Zymotics on a different port to the game. At this point I thought of the problem of using the team and all player message because if there are 13 players overall the message would have to be sent 12 times!!!! So i think of a "pass it on" method e.g. when player a sends a message to all players his computer sends it only to player no. 2's PC but before the actual sound there would be command to send it to player 3 and player 3 plays the sound and at the same moment starts to execute the command to send it to player 4 and so on. Single messages on F1 are just simply sent with no passiong on.

Whoa! Settle down dude :)

The idea of ingame voice chat is good, but I still think it's better accomplished with a separate app. Reinventing the wheel and all that.

That and the fact that there aren't many open source chat apps that could be realistically incorperated into Nexuiz (afaik).

Also, it could be really irritating. Imagine if XSAX joined the voice chat. :x

the thing is that if you use a separate app you have to minimise the game and get fragged again!! And you can't do team VOICE messaging unless you invite people in and stuff . the thing is that everything has to be in game at thetouch of a button.

By the way i forgot to tell but we could do an option of using a lower quality sound for under 18s if they wanna use it because of all those pedofiles

i figured out the bandwitch usage

the voice would use up maximum of 56 kBit/s upload and same download if sent in highest quality of MPEG LAYER 3 (.mp3) but as wav. I think there is one open source (lets hope so i have to find out) well we could do a plug in for VideoLAN and for nexuiz or Zymotic which will open directinput in VLAN and then run a streaming wizard and atomatically set the fille to be streamed to "track from my current play list" and then stream as either http://yourip:8000 ,select the format as mp1 and then Nexuiz or Zymotic comes into play! Now you are broad casting your voice over the net with port 8000 opened. Now you want to listen to other people. Then Nexuiz or Zymotic opens your media player and depending on the player closest to you opens their stream as URL in for example WMP, The host's Nex or Zym send data about players to your pc so you can see where they are on the screen your computer finds the neares teammate and his ip in the game and then opens a media player in this case VLan (videoLAN) with the plugin for nex or zym and VLAN plays an URL http://nearest's.teammates.ip.adress:8000 and plays his direct input. Simple? No we would have to work on plugins!

I'd strongly suggest Mumble. It's a great little app, runs on Linux and Windows, and is much easier to use than Teamspeak. We use it all the time in Alien Arena and it's proven itself to be very reliable, and easy for newbies to use.

could we do a plug-in?
cause i think it would be good to have an in-game interface and have the important feature to group the contact list into players that are in your team(and the players in all the arena.)

we would defiantly win some kind of award if we integrated something like mumble into nexuiz.

...and by we I mean the nexuiz development team (not me)

Mumble's very good.

Direct integration - if not just some kind of binding to the program - would be fantastic.

Oh, and btw, using outside voip programs don't require you to minimize them. You can either set a voice threshold to do voice-activated transmission or assign a hotkey, neither of which require you to leave the game. Not having to rely on launching two separate programs would be ideal, of course.

Don't you need to add some random setting in xorg.conf that will prevent programs from grabbing 100% of all keyboard input in order to do that? I forgot, someone posted it here, it was for alt-tabbing out of nexuiz...
