[SOLVED] Loosing sound during game play.

Postby mondeoscotch » Thu Mar 06, 2008 10:34 pm

Game is running fine, everything is perfect... until sound suddenly stops and graphics getting darker, fps dropping down from 40-60 fps to 20 fps. It looks pretty the same when you press alt+tab and game is running in background or some pop-up window get on first plan. I never had such a problem with v2.3 it just starts after update to v2.4.
That's what happening on GLX version.
SDL is randomly crushing with error: "Segmentation fault (core dumped)".

My configuration:
Ubuntu Linux 7.10
GeForce 7600GT
Driver version: 100.14.19

Desktop is dual screen configured. On some games I had this kind of symptoms when mouse pointer run out to another screen but then I was loosing control over the game, it never happens on Nexuiz.

I'll appreciate if you have any ideas.

Well i have a similar problem.. normally i play with the sdl variant which works fine except this problem: Somtimes it seems to loose the input focus.. so i stop dead and have to repress my keys before i can move again. Thats very annoying if it happens in the middle of a fight or flag capture. There is also a short flicker from setting gamma back to normal and again back to Nexuiz settings.
I tested the glx variant.. there i only seem to experiance the gamma set back so stays dark and i can hardly see anything. But i never had problems with sound with sdl or glx.

I guess both your and my problem could have the same basic cause... I seem to have solved it by running Nexuiz in an X server of its own. It should also be possible to make Nexuiz start a X server by using the startup option
Code: Select all
+vid_x11_display :1
but i did not test that..

I kinda suppose it might happen if some program beeps (like my irc client) and the screenflash happens. Have to experiment and see if it really might be the cause.. But its an idea

Well at least for my post i do not think its Nexuiz's fault.. but some other program that (tries to) graps the input focus. As my problem goes away when i run Nexuiz in an X server of its own and no other program can interfere then. I just did not have had time to analyse it more deeply..

Running game in its own X server doesn't helped me.
I am closing all programs before running game to be sure nothing is disrupting.
But I have small "walk around"...
Whenever I want to play I have to turn off desktop effects (CompizFusion) then instead of loosing sound and control over the game and significant frame rate drop, I'm experiencing only brightness lowering, to bring it back to normal, I have just to move brightness slider in OPTIONS\VIDEO menu (slider is all the time in the same position, I just have to move it one way and back to previous position). This way I don't need to restart a game,

It could be caused by activation of the screensavers

A follow up.. (wrote something similar in an other thread, did not remember there were two):
What was causing the problems for me was the gnome-screensaver! When i activated the option 'Activate screensaver when computer is idle' in the screensaver preferences it tried to start after then configured amount of time and grabbed my input focus, the game got dark but i guess the screensaver noticed i'm active and disabled itself in an instant..
I guess something similar is happening for you, and when Nexuiz is not the application with focus it goes down to 20fps rendering to not hog resources.
