Yes, since I added them ;P
C.Brutail wrote:s it possible, to include htese ones in Nexuiz 2.2 too?

Yes, but we need his permission to make them GPL. I don't think he has a problem with this... but we don't know.

Also, don't forget about the crosshair_size cvar

Yes i know about it but i think the problem still persists. If the crosshair is small its harder to focus on it and if its too big it covers too much of what you want to aim at. Especially with higher fov were the playermodels get smaller. Also if you scale crosshairs up they tend to look bad.
The simple dot crosshair is is too small while i just do not like the 'angle' crosshair which also covers too much. The two + crosshairs in Nexuiz seemed to make it easier for me to aim then with the x crosshairs but those are not as open. So i created one that is more open in the middle so it does not cover the model i try to aim at.
I later noticed this also means that you do not exactly see were you aim at when snipering, you have to concentrate on the crosshair and see were it would cross. Thats when i noticed that the quake3 default crosshair (dot with circle around) allows for both in a very simply and effective way.
Not really qualified thougts about 'ergonomics' so maybe i'm wrong ;) Though i really like this crosshair.

  • you use crosshairs ? use the force !

you use a custom crosshair? cheater!!!! XD

    ...
i never understood the purpose of a crosshair anyway. all one does in Nexuiz is running around, shooting randomly into the air and hoping for a hit...

    what?

  • In the last days i made some crosshairs. They do all work properly.
Anyhow, are there any specs i should follow to avoid incompatiblity? Or limitations?

Hehe, use the cheater force? Custom Crosshairs are even allowed in the ladder.
And yeah i think morfar has some point :P Though i know both of you are just joking around.

I'm not totaly sure.. Colors close to white will be replaced with the color you selected some others are just displayed 'as is' but i think you can only use some sizes for the crosshairs though i'm not sure which ones. And to avoid incompatibility just use numbers > 8 and < 32.. but the menu needs to be adjusted for crosshairs > 8 or you set them via console..

  • I made some simple crosshairs. Just for fun. Had too much time :) .
Since i have no webspace i can show only some screens of what i did. If someone is interested in the crosshairs, i could mail them.
(Of course the files in the *.pk3 have a transparent background and not a black one like shown in the screenshot)

I uploaded the files here: (thx esteel :) )

    http://rapidshare.com/files/7498351/zzz ... GE_big.pk3
    http://rapidshare.com/files/7220348/zzz ... _small.pk3

Just put ONE of the files in your /data directory. You can choose the crosshair in the console by typing
    Code: Select all
    crosshair "xx"

  • Interesting looks.. i'm satisfied with mine. though i might try and see if it can be done with two colors.. The circle could use white/black and the dot in the middle could also be made half white/black so one can't miss the crosshair on different backgrounds.

  • Cool.

The crosshair I always use for ET is a variant of 23. It has a teeny tiny central dot, the vertical legs are shorter, and the horizontal legs are longer.

If I designed a crosshair, I would have super long horizontal legs, with graduations so I could use them to lead a target and compensate for lag.

Interesting idea.. I understand the idea and it sounds neat but is lag really that much of a problem those days? Also as i wrote above.. The lines really would have to be thin not to cover up the model you aim at.

  • I haven't played much Nexuiz lately because it hasn't run well for me since 1.2.1 (*points at sig*), and I don't know if there are any populated American servers yet (on Euro servers, I usually ping around 250, often worse), but I do enjoy laserjumping into weird spots and lasersniping or MG sniping, so I would make good use of it.

They would have to be really fine since if I remember properly, the crosshair expands when you zoom.

  • the crosshair expanding while you xom was a bug iirc, and was fixed a long long time ago :) Except from when you are invisible in minsta, but i think its fixed there too

  • esteel, I liked that round crosshair with a dot in the middle (that's the one I'm using), but could you change that dot to become a little bit bigger or more visible in some way? Sometimes I have a hard time hitting people. They are inside that crosshair just not in the middle and at big distances that makes it even harder.

Or if you could tell me how to do it (or someone else for that matter). The crosshair in the data.pk3 is just totaly white for me. If it is crosshair8.tga (morf told me that).

  • I can describe it using gimp. Just create a file e. g. 45x45 with black background. Draw a white dot and a circle round it. (I dont know the correct words in the english gimp menu. But you will get along). If you are ready with drawing go to <Layer> <transparency> <color to transparence> and choose black.
    Save as *.tga.

  • Indeed if the crosshair is just white for you i guess your software is bad. Its transparent with the circle and the dot being white..
Well the way i did was to use a 400x400 image, create two white cicles (small and big) and did shrink that image to 24x24. I guess i could make you an bigger dot tomorrow unless you want to try yourself.
