  • It was one of the new iMacs.

First, the sound was way different. It was much deeper in pitch, and may or may not have been a little bit slower.

Performace was erratic. It had a tolerable framerate with most effects on in one map, and on the next it dropped tremendously, and turning stuff off didn't help much at all.

The mouse, though, really bugged me. Those squeeze buttons on the side of the mouse register as MOUSE1. Clicking the scroll ball is considered MOUSE3, so I switched it to secondary fire. It's in a poor place, which makes gameplay rather difficult.

It also had a bad tendency to blur when I looked around rapidly.

  • I guess that this means that either Macs suck for some games or Nexuiz sucks for Macs

    XD LOL
    Xfire should support Nexuiz

  • Hmmm. I have an intel iMac, and Nexuiz does none of the things you describe– it runs at about 35-45 fps on max settings. For me, the game plays identically to the same version on my (slightly) more powerful windows machine.
It's a well known fact that apple rarely updates the radeon drivers, but i cant see this being the problem (since my drivers are up to date, and it runs fine)
sigh* i just wish that apple would sell a version of its os that would be supported on all machines, not just their own. too bad the only (legal) option right now to use the mac os is to buy a mac

oh and about the mice, i totally agree with you that mac mice suck monkey testes. They are WAY to light, the ball getes clogged with grime, and mouse clicks sometimes get confused. They feel to me like a fisher price my first mouse. Thats why I use 3rd party peripherals.

I guess that mac had a TFT display attached? Certainly bad response time rates. Hardware stuff...

  • Played some more on the Mac today. It was depressing.

Performance dropped as low as 10 fps at Facing Worlds with everything down or off at 800x600.

The mouse still sucks. I tried binding alt fire to Q. Didn't work that well.

    (And then latency issues too)

I'm thinking about putting Enemy Territory on it. It should be playable with one mouse button, and should run much better.

Also, I hopefully won a convert today. A guy thought it looked awesome and inquired about it, so I gave him the url.

  • well one of the biggest problems with mac is their !#$%^ shader support. Their graphics drivers crash when trying to enable r_glsl which is why its disabled on mac. This is however a huge speedup on anything pre-iceage :)
I was told that not all of their drivers behave that badly so maybe you want to play around with that 'options / effects / open gl 2.0 shaders option' but most probably it will just make it crash..

Iirc the Mac drivers don't crash with OpenGL shaders... But the drivers are rendering bloom totally wrong: http://crylos.tripod.com/nexdeluxe.htm

  • Wait... one of the new iMacs? Those come with four button mice... Are you sure your not talking about the old ass ppc g3 or g4 ones? I could imaginge you would have those kinds of problems with one of those, especially since they have about 16 megs of video ram on an onboard card. :?

  • Yes, it's one of the new ones. Well, newer anyways.

It as well be a one button mouse where gameplay is concerned.

There's the main mouse button. That works fine.

There's clicking the scroll ball. That's clumsy and impractical, and it says some sort of error when it is scrolled. Something about event 11, I think.

The two squeeze buttons on the side of the mouse both do exactly the same thing, which is to register as MOUSE1.

  • Alright, so I updated it, which consequently broke it.

I downloaded the update, unzipped it, and had it overwrite whatever it wanted to in the Nexuiz folder.

I fired it up, and was greeted by a black screen, no sound, and the cursor was 4 grey squares.

I'm going to try a fresh install and see what happens.

    *sigh*

EDIT: it seems to work with the fresh install.

Somehow, my settings carried over to it. I'm a little frightened.

OsX is a Unix perversion, so the user settings are stored in the users home dir under .nexuiz (a directory)
