  • Hey guys and gals,
    Phreak is back.
Some of you older players know me so HEY!
For those who don't, you'll meet my hagger and RL in-game

Well life took it's grip on me so I didn't have much time for anything.
Graduated college, moved in with my GF, etc.

Then I discovered Tremulous and realized that I love that sort of gameplay and became very good at it.
But then a few weeks ago I got a tad sentimental and figured I'll check up on this baby so here I am.
Still the good old nex, just a tad newer

Now here is something funny, for all you FPS/Graphics/Card performance junkies.
My graphics card fried on me a few months ago and since this box has seen better days, I'm saving up for a new gaming machine. So, no card upgrade.
And so I switch back to my Integrated and try nex, just for shits and giggles, thinking that there is no way it's even going to load up.

Well guess what, low.cfg, 16 bit, skybox enabled 90 FPS on most maps!

It even looks better then it did with my MX420.

I know that 2.2.2 got extensive performance tweaks and optimizations but i really didn't expect this.

    Well, either way.
I'm mostly playing on Standard Deatchmatch NY server since I get a nice 20 ping there.

I also see that CTF became quite....popular.
While it's fun, I find it a shame that people got away from all the fragging fun and gibbing good times.
Let's go play some good old DM fellas.

    Cya all in-game.

Well, I'll make a point to join servers you play on. Just let me know what they are.
I know there will be ping issues but who cares. Nexuiz is all about fun anyways.

    @kozak6
Well I still play Trem and enjoy it quite a bit but I miss the maturity and IQ level of Nex players.
It's a very different and older population then what most FPS have seen in the last few years.
I really hope it stays that way.

True, until now I've just seen two idiots among all players... one of them provides an anti-women server, the other one teamkills and says GAY all the time.

As for the integrated graphics - what graphics chip do you have, and which OS? With that performance, it could enter the list of "supported" chips.
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • TY for the welcome back guys.

    @div
    Well, here are my specs

    P4 2.8
    512MB SDRam
    Intel Extreme Graphics 2
    Intel 82865G Graphics Conroler

    Running WinXP 32 (Home Edition)

Like any sane person running XP, I'm running minimal processes and minor performance tweaks.

Aside from the decent CPU, everything else is quite anti-gaming on this system.
My main issue is the fact that the board only has PCI slots. No AGP or PCI-e, so the only card that I could get is the FX5200/5500.
IMO, while the card is not more then $50-$80, depending om RAM and vendor, it's not worth the money since there is only so much this baby can spit out.

I'll post some in-game screens of how nex looks with this setup, as a point of perspective of what to expect from something like this.

    *EDIT*
    Screens as promissed

I mostly get a steady 90FPS, never dropping bellow 40ish, which is playable in 90% of the time.
I really can't wish for more considering what I'm playing on.

Games like Tremulous are capped at 90 and never fall below with all effects on @ 32bit
In Nexuiz, I can also run bloom, but at 16 bit, bloom looks like poop

  • Cool, I do see some 16bit artifacts, apart from that, it seems to look good enough for playing... actually, many players play at such settings for increased performance or better visibility of enemies.

  • The reason for 16 bit is kind of strange.
When I try 32bit, my screen flickers. And I tont mean slight flickering either.
It feels like my monitor is set at 20 mhz rather then 85.
I've messed with it for a while and came to the conclusion that 16 is the only way to play for me.

If you have suggestions, feel free to share but I'm quite happy with the performance. Even 16 bit doesn't look THAT bad.
    BTW nice screens :p
I hope in a month or two, I'll post similar ones. (once I upgrade)

    Try setting v_hwgamma 0.

  • Well I got it resolved last night.
It was a combination of the in-game refresh rate and v_hwgamma.

It's looks slightly better but I lose up to 10 FPS, depending on the map and location.
I'll keep it on 32 and see if it's still as playable as it was with 16.

    TY guys

    Yes.
Not sure how it got messed up but it's all good now.
All I had to do was delete the autogen and let the game write a new one after which I set all my settings to.

Now it's sticking and looks good at 32bit

I also had to set picmip to 3 in order to get a decent FPS. It's still looks okay, even at 3.
(as you can see from the screens)

  • It has a max of 96MB.
It uses 6MB for the OS so 90 is left for Nexuiz.

This is extremely low for any game, hence why I was convinced that Nexuiz wouldn't even load.

    Quick question.
I found a few extremely inexpensive PCI cards on amazon.com and was wondering which you would go for, if you had to.
    Choices are the following:
    FX5200 128mb
    FX5500 128mb
    MX4000 128mb

I know a bit about the FX range but nothing about the MX4000.
I looked for reviews but couldn't find anything with some detailed information on technology, etc.

    Thanks

  • Sorry for double posting.

I just got and intalled the FX5200 and while I still have to tweak the setting for the most preformance while retaining looks, Nexuiz allready looks and feels a tad better.

As soon as I'm finished doing all the tweaks, you'll see a lot more of me online :)
