  • Hey just thought I'd let you all know, while I was out in the mountains on vacation this week, I picked up a copy of a magazine called "Maximum PC", (stupid wallmart was out of PC Gamer), and saw that Nexuiz was on the cover CD. Not only was it included, but it was the featured game on it, with a screenshot printed on the front, and the description "A free, phenomenal fps".

Oh, and that magazine is pretty cool too...

  • Well there was a surge in player numbers but i'm not sure if its a direct consequence of that magazine. Would be nice however.
That would explain the bad ctf games i had the last few days. Many new players that still need to learn what to do and how to be helpful :). But yeah i know ctf is hard for a new player.. i just wish i had more patience when actually playing :)

  • IIRC the American Maximum PC is published by Future Publishing who make just about every magazine in Britain. If they put something on the cover of one of their magazines it generally gets on the cover of half of their other magazines so we could see Nexuiz everywhere pretty soon.

  • esteel: probably the best thing to do, even if you are in a clan, is to come up with strategies for each map and explain it to the nubs, however painfull it might be.

If I'm pissed though (did this once on a splidfisk server) I will flame the hell out of noobs, and they'll just say things like "yup, just newbish me". Most of the time though I'm pretty helpfull.

  • Thanks for the heads up irritant, I made sure to go out and grab myself a copy!

http://willis.planetnexuiz.com/media/maximumpc for those interested (sorry for the lighting)

Sadly, there is no mention of the game at all inside the magazine, only on the insert page and CD, so no review or anything, just a one paragraph description and link to the nexuiz website and the game on the disk. Version 2.2.2

And for reference, the PC Gamer mention was in the September 2006 issue (once again, no review, just props).

  • Apparently it is also mentioned in the Feb 20th issue of PC Mag, but with an error that will be corrected in the next issue.

Here is an e-mail from JeepMcMuddy, who e-mailed me and informed PC Mag

Just a heads up they are printing a correction in the next issue...

Hello, just wanted to let you know there is a typo in the fun & games
section of your "Best Free Software" article. You have listed
"Nexiuz" and its URL as "www.nexiuz.com" It should read "Nexuiz" and
    the URL should read "www.nexuiz.com"

The URL you have listed takes you to a parked domain page.

Cheers, and thanks for the great magazine, I look forward to each issue.

Yes GPL does allow that. After all that also the basic thing every linux distribution does..

I've had to explain this to a lot of people who e-mailed me, but yes, they don't need the Nexuz team's permission to put it on their cds.
This means you could also sell Nexuiz versions on ebay or in any store

  • It kinda bugged me when these people at a local business show were selling OpenOffice CDs for $15 and Knoppix CDs for $20, though. I thought about selling Nexuiz copiies at my school's LAN parties for about $1 a piece, though, but that's a nonprofit fundraiser for my class and I really just want to spread the word about Nex :)

  • Well if you sell it i think you should find a good price. Just selling for the production costs will make it look cheap and often people do not like cheap stuff. If you kinda feel bad about making money you can donate it to alientrap or sponsor some server :)

sure, I'll donate it to the TSA server which is really a pile of crap that I found in my attic. pentium 3, probably like 128 megs of ram, 4GB hard drive, etc, etc.

Actually, I think that's not a bad idea lol...

Sounds good enough for 2 nex servers ;)
I would recommend running a minimal linux without X as os, otherwise you might run a little low on RAM (or you could delete all models).

  • Ok, I've started working on the disk. It will have many forms of it, such as .debs, .rpms, and the standard zip. Also I will be including the 35 map pack, some other maps, and psychmod (eventually). I will be getting 10 dollars for each disk, however all the money made from this will go into a new server to be hosted in NY, dedicated to hosting nexuiz games. I will start a poll that will ask the users which gamemodes they would like to see the most. Even if you don't live in the states and don't care about a new NY server, it will be a really nice disk and will save you the time of downloading stuff.
