  • Just pronounce it the exact way it's spelled and problem solved. How hard can it be? I think the whole concept of changing the name is dumb just because some people cannot read or spell.
If I spell 'icecream' wrong like 'icekream' doesn't mean they will change it. And I bet tons of people spelled that word wrong who are not familiar with English. Same story goes for Nexuiz.

That's between you and the UK :-P

Colour's probably the original spelling however and thus it's more "correct" than color. During Shakespearean times, the English language was highly unmoderated. People would spell things however they pleased / knew how. Only the strongest words/spellings stuck when the language became more standardized.

  • I think the problem with pronouncing it exactly the way it is spelled is that it would cause you to say it incorrectly, heh. Unfortunately, I think this has a deeper effect than a cheap laugh at a lan party though...

As somebody mentioned above, the main menu says it necks-e-us, and I think that's as bad a mispronunciation as Bush saying nu'-kya-ler (NO, I'm not bringing politics into the discussion!). You can't make "clear" sound like "kya ler"--the letters just aren't in that order. Period. As the name is spelled right now, the u is before the i, so it would be pronounced "necks you is" or "necks uh is" (plus the z isn't helping anything).

Back to my point; I just found out about the game (yes, *sigh* via slashdot) and as an outsider looking in, this issue seemed pretty glaring. As a community fighting for developers, I'm surprised a name fix hasn't happened yet. Out loud, the name "Nexius" is a fun, memorable, made up but plausible word appropriate for an open source indy community game. But (and I'm dead serious here) in print, "Nexuiz" smacks of 13375P34|< and scriptkiddies and will turn off some potential players and, more to the point, it will also (no pun intended) alienate code contributors. I'm a developer and my first reaction to reading about Nexuiz was rolling my eyes. Then I played it and my opinion changed. That's an unfortunate progression. I gave Warsow, Urban Terror, Tremulous, and .kkreiger their ten minutes of interest and moved on. Neck Soyuz is worth much much more attention and even involvement, in spite of its name.

I can imagine the marketing meeting where someone brought up names like Little Big Plenat, Bayoushock, Hoalo 3, and Quaek (and I can imaging the one-on-one meeting after the meeting *ahem*).

  • Even if you are correct in your point (I'm not really against that nor for that either). 'Nexuiz' is too well known now (by those who knows it :P), in my personal opinion, it's too late to change anything. The word, is now loved by many people and many are used to it.

It might be true, I did have this problem but, if one really pays attention one would try to rethink how to pronounce it :P
In fact, how you said it would be pronounced (necks uh is), is pretty much dead on, except I say 'iz' in the end instead. To me, it's perfectly natural, while if I try to say 'Necks ii us' I find it a bit hard :P I'm too used to the other now, my mind wants to say 'necks uh iz' :D

There's nothing wrong with the name.
Your argument that the name will alienate code contributors is absolutely rediculious and pure unabashed speculation that is common from the mouths of players who never really did any development. Many people love to give advice when they have no basis to do so.

  • -dude1: Hey, what's that you're playing?
-dude2: It's an open source game, the engine is based off quake one
-dude1: Whoa, that looks nothing like quake one!
-dude2: Yeah, they've added so many features that you can't really compare anymore, it's very advanced. It's really cool.
    -dude1: Nice.
    -dude2: Yep.
    -dude1: So, what's it called?
    -dude2: Well... it's called Nexuiz.
    -dude1: What?
    -dude2: ... Nexuiz...
    -dude1: ... What?
-dude2: Yeah... I'll write it down for you.
    -dude1: Thanks.

Ah ha ha. There is something minor wrong with the name; it's merely not pronounced phonetically from how it's spelled. There are no English words where "ui" is pronounced "E ә"--it's simply backwards. *shrug*. We English-speakers do manage fine for 'cough' and 'bough' not rhyming. Same goes for 'go', 'so', 'no', and then 'do'. This is a lot of talking for a leetspeak spelling of the name of a video game, heh heh.

Ignoring all that... Wow dude, i hope you were trolling; I wasn't attacking the game so there's no need to get defensive and offensive. It's certainly true that people love to give advice when they have no basis to do so: you were rude to somebody you don't know, somebody new to the community, and in calling someone else's ideas ridiculous you demonstrated that you also "love to give advice when they have no basis to do so". Here's the basis which I used for my statement and which you claimed doesn't exist, though; I'm a programmer for a living and so are most of my still-gaming friends. Rude people, obvious-yet-unaddressed bugs (unhealthy dev community?) and, yes, even the turn-off name have all been mentioned as reasons not to participate. Anecdotal, sure--but it doesn't take much to disprove a broad statement made in the negative. In any case, I'm burying my hatchet. Two of my favorite xkcds: 386 438
