  • hi, this post is inspired by the recent poll on mouse types.
    http://forums.alientrap.local/viewtopic.php?t=1189

in it a method of calibrating the mouses sensitivity was mentioned, rotating the character 360 degrees and seeing how far the mouse has moved.

i'm curious to know how other people have their mice set up.

  • interesting, i'm curious to know what your gaming style is. that level of sensitivity would make your character less manouverable, but would increase your ability to aim accurately. i'm guessing your style might tend more towards accurate shooting from a distance than close up fighting. would i be right?

  • I use steermouse (http://plentycom.jp/en/steermouse/), which has some nifty features, including a definable hotkey that lets you slow down the mouse on the fly, like an 'accuracy' button on many joysticks (not toggle but held down). Its really usefull for sniping. On normal mode, my mouse is about 15-17 cm per 360° :D

  • I leave my Razer Diamondback and the game all at default settings, which appears to give me around 2in (51mm) for a 360

I remember back with my first optical, the MS Intellimouse Optical (which I loved) didn't even make a full turn across my entire mouse pad and then some.. how things have changed..

  • Well as i already wrote in that thread you mentioned, i use 12cm/360° currently but when i started gaming it was a higher sensitivity aka even less space then that. I think this depends a lot on how people aim.. i tend to hold my arm still and aim by using my wrist.. so i dislike having to move my arm too much. Others like morfar and ai probably move their arm a lot and might need that low sensetivity to be able to aim at all :)

  • I have keys 1 to 6 bound to fov 120, 105, 85, 60, 30, and 10, with sensitivities 11, 10, 8, 6, 3, and 2 respectively. I usually play on setting 1, so about 2-3 inches of movement for a 360. I might experiment with reducing sensitivity though...my accuracy is not as good as I'd like.

  • bnonn, that's a really interesting idea. i'd like to try that, any chance you could tell me how to set that up?

  • Sure. The way I currently have things set up, I have a config.cfg which has the single line exec bnonn.cfg. I'm not sure if this is the best way; I suspect using autoexec.cfg is probably the recommended method, but anyway.

In bnonn.cfg, I have the following lines set aside for the fov bindings (note that I've changed these from my previous post, based on experimentation):

      bind "1" "fov 120; sensitivity 8"
      bind "2" "fov 105; sensitivity 6"
      bind "3" "fov 85; sensitivity 5"
      bind "4" "fov 60; sensitivity 4"
      bind "5" "fov 30; sensitivity 3"
      bind "6" "fov 10; sensitivity 2"

You'll want to make sure you don't have keys 1-6 bound to anything else in the config file; you could just do a search in the file, or otherwise just stick unbind "1"; in front of the commands above (obviously replacing 1 with 2, 3 and so on as needed).

Once you load Nexuiz, and assuming you've execced this config file, you will be able to hit 1 to get fov 120, 2 for fov 105, etc. Bear in mind this isn't a toggle; it's an actual fov change. When I'm using the nex, I tend to hit 3 unless I'm in a very fast-paced area, in which case I'll use 2. The same goes for the machinegun or shotgun; any hitscan weapons require lower fov and sensitivity to get the most accurate aim. If I'm a long way from anyone, I'll hit 4 or 5 to snipe; and when I'm really far away, and know that I'm not going to get taken from behind, I'll hit 6. When I'm using the rocket launcher or mortar or whatever, I tend to stick to 1 or sometimes 2, depending on the situation.

    Hope this helps (:
