  • Some time ago there was a thread that mentioned voice-chat as a must-have for future releases.

I did a little bit searching for OS vchat software. What I found are those three:
    http://mumble.sourceforge.net/

Perhaps it would be easier for devs to integrate such a system directly into nexuiz than coding one on their own.

Otherwise: Serveradmins might set up servers for "roger wilco" or "teamspeak" - as long as their servers are not used commercially
or we could all use Mumble, it has a dedicated server named Murmur

Found some clients for XFire (using GAIM) and RogerWilco:

  • well the xfire for gaim thing doesn't have voice chat built in. The linux ventrillo client isn't ready yet so that's out, teamspeak is really the only choice. But I think we should get an opensource voip library and just play around with it one day, no need to put it in right away, but it would be a nice feature.

  • Well first of all if we wanted to integrate voice chat into the game it would have to be added to the engine, so the voice chat stuff would need to be GPL and at least run on linux, mac and windows.
And then i'm not sure we really want this.. http://cad-comic.com/comic.php?d=20070516
    :)
Yes i know its a nice thing to have but would it really be used other then for 'real' matches? Meaning ladder matches? It enough to READ some of the stuff on public ctf matches.. i'm not sure if i want to HEAR some of that bullshit.

  • As like many options which are heavily debated, make it an svar :) (assuming the idea would ever actually come into fruition)

  • many ventrilo/Teamspeak -ish programs use speex codec for voice communication, one example of this is xbox and xbox360, HalfLife (steam) Halflife2/Source.

and it's based on the ogg format iirc

ogg is a container, which may contain speex audio.
