A new game mode is now in Nexuiz SVN and appears to be stable and play well enough for inclusion...

Let's skip the story stuff as usual :)

A contest is being played between two to four teams. Everyone gets a small portable safe that contains a numbered account. The one who can first open the safe wins all the money. In each team, one player gets a key. However, to open the safe, one needs to own all keys at once; the locks of the safe are designed so that you can't take the keys out when they are in "open" position.

The keys are equipped with a radio frequency transmitter that tells everyone about its current location. However, the frequency of the sender is unknown at start of the game - it has to be scanned first. Until the frequency has been found out, everyone just knows where his team mates holding keys are, because they use their own sender to inform team mates.

Destroying a key is against the rules - the team which destroys their key by throwing it into an unreachable place loses. An exception is pushing a player holding a key into endless void - part of the prize money is awarded for that.

    How to play:
    • The game is played in multiple rounds, until timelimit or fraglimit is reached. When a round starts, you get a countdown... once the time is up, one player of each team gets a key and everyone starts scanning the tracking frequency.
    • Protect your team mates, especially the ones who are carrying a key.
To assist with this, your HUD shows KEY CARRIER in green where your key carrying friends are.
    • Snatch the remaining keys from your enemies. Kill them, and then collect the key they were holding.
Once you scanned the radio transmitter's frequency, you can track where your enemies holding a key are, or where keys have been dropped. They appear as KEY CARRIER in the enemy's color in your HUD, or as DROPPED KEY in cyan.
    • Once your team has all the keys, bring them together. If you have a key, meet your team mates so you can open your safe.
As a hint, RUN HERE is displayed in cyan where your team mates are if you all keys are in your team and you are carrying one.
    • If you are carrying a key, you live in constant danger - everyone is after you, and you have to take care of the key not falling into void when you die. Your team mates should be there to protect you.
REMEMBER: the key is equipped with a radio transmitter. YOU CAN'T HIDE!
    • Once an enemy team got all the keys, you get a message displayed that notifies about that. Run to the enemies and prevent them from getting together! Snatch the key away from them in the last second!
    • If you think it is hopeless, push a key carrying enemy into the void and therefore prevent them from winning.

Stuff still to do: make sounds for the game mode (for collecting a key, dropping one, bringing all together, and for the round ending because a key has been destroyed)

    Scoring:
    • Fragging an enemy: 1 point
    • Collecting a key: 3 points
    • Fragging an enemy key carrier: 2 points
    • Getting all keys together and opening the safe: 100 points in 2-team mode, 200 points in 3-team mode, 300 points in 4-team mode (evenly distributed among all key carriers)
    • Pushing an enemy carrying a key into void: 60 points
    • Winning because an enemy destroyed a key they were carrying: 50 points, evenly distributed among all other teams (but key carriers get twice the points)

You can play the mode on 141.2.16.16 (RBI keyhunt)

    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • I'm still confused :?

Can you just stick one key in at a time, then get the next one, or do you have to get all of then first, then stick them all in...?
    :]

  • "Of course, the key can't be taken out of the keyhole when it is open, so the only way to open the safe is getting all three keys together."

So in other words, to get the key out you have to close the safe again... in other words, you need all keys at once, not one after another.

    Such locks exist...

    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS

  • Just forget that safe.. thats just background story :).
All you need to do to win a round is to get all the keys there are, or when your team has all the keys, all keycarriers must meet up.
But thats rather hard as keycarriers are target number uno.. I was just playing two or three rounds, its very fun and it was quite balanced. That gamemode really has to get into 2.3!

  • It sounds neat from the description, but I don't like the idea that it's suddenly un-winable just because someone falls in a pit. Imagine what would happen on evilspace (yes, I know, that's a poor example of a tactical map anyway). The keys should be returned somewhere safe or neutral when they disappear, much like flags warp back to base when dropped for too long.

  • Well, they do return - destroying the key ends the round and the one who did it gets punished (by giving points to everyone else).

On facing worlds, this does happen sometimes, but not THAT often - but for that reason, I made the keys heavier (that is, react less to weapon force and not fly that far when the player is gibbed).

So in other words, on space maps, there are two ways to win - either get all keys, or push an enemy key carrier from the map. The latter however does not yield that many points :)

  • I like the name "Key Hunt" because I can shorten it to "Khunt" and that will make me giggle.

So will people who prefer key hunt to other game modes now be known as "khunt lovers"?

Great game mode btw, muchos kudos.

  • very fun mode! alot of maps fit for this aswell. Didnt know new modes would be possible to be shared like maps.

maybe make the rbi server 3 teamed? would make it abit more complex.

Nexuiz downloads entire pk3s, you can put anything pretty anything in them (maps/textures/models/sounds/etc...).
But as long as a new gamemode doesn't require any new content on the client, you don't need to download anything...

  • Actually, I did need to make some files for key hunt.

    http://mensa.ath.cx/~polzer/temp/keyhunt-configs.zip

All one needs are mapcfg files with kh_ prefix that also set g_keyhunt and g_keyhunt_teams (both are needed!). Any big DM map will do.

Other than that, key hunt just needs the waypoint sprites and the key model on the client - which are provided as forced download package by my server.

  • I have tried this game mode and I think it's very cool: well done, great idea !
The distribution of points it's weird tho, fragging almost doesnt count overall, I would have expected it would work in a more similar way to CTF, when do count in a significant way both the frags and recapturing the flag.
Anyway I guess you decided this in order to maximize che strategy and the importance of the final goal, I just have to test the game more to be able to appreciate all the strategic issue concerned.
I am going to test it more very soon then :)
Greetings to all the forum, my first post here. Nexuiz is a great game, keep up the great work, I am trying to let people become addicted as I am slowly becoming, and in the future I would like to model some maps too, I'm the guy who some weeks ago entered the chat to suggest a soccer CTF map, and I've other ideas, but this is OT here was just to introduce myself. Cya!

You must not have played ctf_succersocks then - a soccer CTF map.
