  • Why did no server admin notice the suitable player count for a map?

e.g. farewell with 10players or o-fun with 15 Players is no fun because you only run with the shotgun around
    Aneurysm 4 the win !!!!! :D

  • I've been preaching this since day one. And forget the server admins...what about the players. I honestly can't comprehend how the Players enjoy maps like that with 10 or more people. I can't stand to play like that. There's no skill involved at all. Even still, it seems that most people just enjoy free for alls where you run around like chickens with heads cut off and shoot at any damn thing you see. Meh... :?

  • i agree... 10-person DM is spammy. :)

well, i'm working to setup some competitive-focused servers... so max players = 8 (4v4) for TDM and CTF... etc... once i get them all setup proper, ill be sure to make a post with all the IPs and locations. They'll probably be in Internap datacenters which are peered with GameRail... should be pretty smooth experience.

the US is lacking in quality servers, imo.

  • Is there a way server admins can change the available map list according to player count?
So if 10 players are on a server they can only vote for maps suitable for 10 players.

  • In theory yes, the feature exists, but it's too hard to find out good player counts for each map.
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • Cortez, you bring up a good point.

However, one problem is the lack of maps in the 10-16 player range.

Vomit's idea is interesting. A spin off of that could be if a player limit is set for the map (in the mapcfg) so that the remaining players would have to spectate until a spot opens.

Or the map could dynamicly adjust to the amount of players on it. If the player count reaches a certain value it triggers an event. These events could allow players to gain access to more of the map so that it would be less crowded.

    Example:
You could have a map with 2 floors, the bottom floor is filled with acid. The acid would drain to expose the bottom floor if the number of players increases past a set number

  • This idea sounds like too much work..
The current way things (could) work is to have a file maps/mapname.sizes with two lines in it. first is min players, second max. And only maps there fullfill both values are considered as 'next' map.
But to be honest i'm too lazy now to take a closer look and so i'm not totally sure about the file name .. :)

  • yeah my memory was good.. for example a file Nexuiz/data/maps/silvercity.sizes with content:
    Code: Select all
    5
    15

would mean that map is only considered if you have between 5 and 15 players. As others said its hard to get good numbers but if someone does such files it would be easy to include them either as options for the server admins or include them by default.
