  • First I would like to say that Nexuiz is a great game and community. Nexuiz is the first FPS I've played heavily and the first one I have played online. I've been playing Nexuiz for about 4 months now and would like to give back by running a small server.

I would like to run a dedicated minstagib server for up to 8 players. I have an old Via C3 800 mhz PC with 512MB Ram. Would that be enough to handle it? I have better systems I could use but the C3 only uses 40 Watts of power!

Also my bandwidth is 3m / 768k. Is that enough for 8 Players ?

  • Well other people could give you a more technical response.

I'll say from my own experience of running a server, the maps that you select make a difference. On some maps, the server's CPU usage jumps up considerably. You would have to do some testing to figure out which ones taxed your CPU the least and use those.

One of the issues with Minstagib in particular is that lag really would mess up that game. If the lag is too much, then people won't use your server. My server isn't the best server in the world, and the webhost isn't great either. But the game mode is CTF...so it's a little more forgiving.

  • In current DP (from svn), you can use "status" to check if the server is running well. If it shows any more than 0% lost, the map or the player count is too high/complex.
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • Based on your system specifications, that box should be able to run the dedicated server, however you'll need to choose an OS with decent networking capabilities [ie anything but Windows 98 & >]

    768k / 8 = a cozy 96 kb/sec per person assuming a full server

As long as your server is located in North America, you should be able to draw an audience [first minstagib server situated here]; perhaps you could also set 'g_balance_nex_refire ' to '1' [classic minstagib, fun] to capture an even wider number of players...

  • it's 768 kbits per second = 96 kb/s for ALL players. So about 12 kb/s per player which "should" be enough, but I doubt the ping will stay low, it certainly won't if it's ADSL which is unsuitable for hosting really good servers anyway.

I just played on a server hosted on adsl, and even with only 4 players the pings shot up and it was laggy. Minstagib on a laggy server would suck. :(

Unfortunately , Fios is not available in my town. Maybe I could talk my folks into hosting it at their house. Hmmmm , They could get 10m/2m for about the same cost as the cable connection they have now. :D That would rock!
