  • Me and my brother are taking a trip to Texas for quakecon, should be good. I'll be there due to some a programming contract I've had with a marketing company, and I was offered a flight there.
I am hoping to really show off Nexuiz, maybe get a lot of games in, or maybe just meet up with some other people interested in Nexuiz. I don't know how popular it would be with the Quake3 crowd and such, but hopefully there will be few people there who are up for a game.
I'll be wearing my Nexuiz t-shirt and trying to get as many people playing as possible

  • Awesome,

Haven't heard of quakecon, I went to the site and it looks fun. Nexuiz should attract some people.

  • Pretty good first quakecon experience.
I wasn't able to show off Nexuiz a lot, since there is too much spam on the DCC to post anything. I saw a few people playing it, and I joined in for a free games, but most of my time spent was either checking out the events or working with the local company that brought me there.
The highlight of the entire thing though, was the Carmack speech. Afterwards he answered any questions to whoever came up and asked. I asked him about if he had heard of Nexuiz, or had any interest in what projects have come out of his GPL engines. He said he could never remember the name of the projects, but once a year or so he goes online to check on what people have done with them. He also talked about the decision to go with Steam a bit.
Another good part, was that I won a quickdraw tournament for a thousand dollars, which I have no idea if I am actually going to get (they said afterwards it was going to be hard to send the money to Canada, so I just gave them my information and hopefully it comes).

I brought my computer there and stored it in the airplane's baggage also, which for the way to Dallas worked fine. On the way back however, after the Dallas airport in Toronto, I opened up my bag and noticed the video card had actually POPPED out and was on the other side. The tower's side was completely dented in, every single card except the motherboard had came loose, and the keyboard was actually broken in half. I don't know how the hell they did this much damage, as the bag was marked fragile, and there was padding all around the computer. It basically must have either be stomped on, thrown into a wall, or fell from a building.
I managed to fix most of it, and now the only thing messed up is one CD drive and the tower. So in the end, still worth it. Hopefully I'll be able to fix it with the quickdraw winnings.

You didn't know? That's standard airline baggage handling protocol.

  • Would have been interesting to ask what were the user names of the people playing Nexuiz; for all we know, Dave could have been at the convention, watching you.

Well, baggage handling is particularly rough, baggage bumps and rotates as part of the conveyor system, I suppose that's why we travel with laptops in carry-on luggage...

  • I'm wondering as well on what a quickdraw tournament is, and how much more care fragile items receive.

Sounds like there was ups and downs, but I hope you enjoyed yourself overall.
