  • Howdy all, Sullivan (AUS) here. Many will know me as captain of the high pings from the Galt and Lazy Dog servers, many won't.

Someone who wanted to get into Nexuiz was asking what top-of-the-line gear I was running to be able to play as well as I do (not that I play all that well, but I manage to get myself to the top of the list now and then).

They were surprised to know that most of my setup is made from bottom-of-the-line recycled goods.

So I thought I would ask everyone else the question, what's under your hood?

    For me:

    Processor: 2.4ghz Celeron, 128 L2 Cache.
Ram: 1G DDR400 (@333) Value Select (pulled from recycled computers)
    Video Card: GeForce FX5500
Hard Drive: Old IDE 80GB Seagate
    Keyboard: Acer Chicony (recycled)
    Mouse: Dell (recycled)
    Network: Onboard
Sound: Onboard, runs to a set of old Nicole speakers (recycled)
*I actually bought some Sony headphones yesterday, so I can now hear when people (I'm looking at you Lixivial) are sneaking up behind me.
    Monitor: 17inch @ 600x800 (for game only)
    OS: Windows XP (highly optimized)
    Connection: 1.5mb/256kb

The only thing good about my setup is my router which is a WNR834B, which I won in a competition (for being APC Magazines geek of the month this last February).

So anyways, what are you all running?

  • Processor: Dual-core 3.2GHz Pentium 4 (Prescott, aka the PresHOT due to thermal issues ;)), latest microcode
    Ram: 4GB DDR2 (non-EDAC, 667Mhz, 5-5-15)
MOBO: GA-P35-DS3R (rev.2), latest stable BIOS
Video Card: 256MB GeForce 7900 GTO (modded to near-GTX timings)
Hard Drive: Two Western Digital Raptors (WD740GD) in AHCI (slash and home) and two Seagate Cheetahs (15K.3 ST318453LC 18GB) on an Adaptec 29160N (yes, running at 180, since I can't justify the $200+ for a 320 controller) (for /tmp, /var/tmp - rbind on one drive - and audio projects on the other)
Keyboard: PS/2 MS Natural. Everything else *sucks*. :P
Mouse: PS/2 MS Optical Wheel Mouse. Gaming mice are for wussies.
Network card: D-Link something or other (8139too)
    Sound: Audigy 2 ZS
    Monitor: 19" ViewSonic CRT (A91f+) - 19" (18" viewable)
OS: back to Archlinux, custom RT kernel (2.6.24-rc2-rt1-dp01)
Connection: 10Mb down / 1Mb up cable modem behind a DD-WRT modded router.

  • AMD Athlon XP 2100+ 1.7 GHz
    1024 MB DDR 400 RAM
Gigabyte ATI Radeon 9000 PRO 128 MB (Love this card despite it's age)
Used to have X1650 PRO but ATI closed source Linux drivers are horrible.
On board AC97 audio for Linux :(
    SB X-Fi ExtremeMusic for Windows
13.0 GB Fujitsu HD w. Ubuntu Linux 7.10 RC (Need bigger HD!!)
100 GB Segate HD w. Windows XP Home Edition SP2
5.0 MB/364 KB on cable modem

All in all, this rig runs Nexuiz surprisingly well. Major overhaul coming up for full Linux compatibility and ditching Windows completely. :D

  • Intel Core2Quad Q6600 @ 3.0 Ghz (only when needed, otherwise stock 2.4 Ghz)
    on Gigabyte P35-DQ6
    with 4 GB DDR2 400Mhz RAM,
    a GF 8800GTS 320 MB,
    a SB Audigy 4,
    and 2x 500 GB WD RE2.

Running Win XP 32 bit and 64 bit (Dual boot).

Connected to Internet by University (which is good and bad at the same time, good because of bandwith, bad because of packetloss and downtimes)

System cooled by water and some additional fans for motherboard heatpipe.

For gaming I use a default keyboard from 1999, a MX518 and a Speedlink Medusa 5.1 Headset. Using two mousepads (Steelpad QcK and QcK+).

  • Ah well, to fill up the forum with more useless content, here's my PC specs ;-)

AMD Athlon64 Venice core at stock 1.8GHz, scythe ncu-3000 monster heatpipe.
Gigabyte K8NF-9 motherboard. Chipset runs pretty hot.
    3GB DDR-400 RAM (2x512MB + 2x1GB)
    Gigabyte GF 6600 non-GT 256MB PCE-E 16x heatpipe, no fan.
    1 120GB Seagate 7200.7 P-ATA suspended with rubber bands
    1 320GB Seagate 7200.9 S-ATA mounted on acoustic foam
    Nec 3540A optical drive
Antec SLK3000 case lined with acoustic foam, Seasonic S12 430W PSU
Air cooled by three (including PSU fan) 120mm case fans (cpu idle/load temp 28/33C),
The only audible noise in the system is made by the ESI Juli@ sound card
Logitech flat keyboard, prefer the action and lack of height compared to the Keytronics KT-2000 I used previously.
Copperhead, mousepad is a hard plastic-on-neoprene thingy that's at least 10 years old.
    LG L2000C 20" LCD 1600x1200 (S-IPS, proper 8 bit, 8ms)
17" ADI 5GT 1600x1200 CRT from '98 with dying electronics. Still hooked up, but not used anymore.
DSL 8/1 Mbit/s connection. Ping was very low until they replaced the modems in the switching station a couple of months ago.
    Linux (ubuntu edgy + custom...)
    No printer!

  • In response to all the power rigs, might I say that my lightweight laptop...

    2 GBs DDRII RAM
    Core Duo (1.6 ghz)
Windows XP Media Center (HEAVILY optimized and meticulously maintained.)
Intel Integrated 950 Chipset (256 megs shared video RAM)

...actually runs the newest edition of Nexuiz very comfortably on default settings. The previous release sucked - I usually had about 15 FPS with EVERYTHING turned off - but this new one is speedy and runs great.

  • CPU: AMD Sempron 64 3400+ (Stock: 2,0GHz, Over Clocked: 2,38GHz)
    Mainboard: EPoX EP-8NPA SLi
    Soundcard: Soundblaster Live! 24-bit
    RAM: 1GB 300MHz
Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 206BW (20", 1680x1050 native resolution, widescreen, 2ms response time, DVI connection between the PC)
Video Card: 2x NVIDIA GeForce 6600GT, SLI linked together. (AFR) 128MB VRAM
    PSU: 500 Watt Nexus, SLI-Ready
Harddisks: Both are seagate. One is 80GB which I use for the root filesystem, and the other one is 120GB which I use for the /home folder. Pretty handy in case I really screw up the system, where I only need to format the root fs and keep all of my old settings, documents, downloads, map projects and other files in /home and they are usable right after the first boot.
Case cooler: *Erhm* I've detatched the 120mm case cooler from the back of the case and *Cough* just loosely put it next to the two *Ahem* passively cooled video cards. (Which now idle at 55 degrees instead of 70 like they used to. :P
Case: Antec Sonata II which I've painted some ugly flames on. Oh and by the way, I have no case door attached to the case, because I wanted the hot air from the GPU to blow right out of the case and this seems to work pretty well. (It's just my room getting close to 30 degrees hot after for example cl_capturing a video with full effects.)
    Keyboard: Saitek Eclipse keyboard (Illuminated)
    Mouse: Logitech MX518
Mousepad: Unknown brand, low friction teflon mousepad. Pretty huge surface
Operating system: Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon (2 days till it's not beta anymore!)

The 4 last properties, and of course the monitor, those are the only things I'm happy with in this... umm... *Thinks for another hour to find something offensive to say... ... rubbish bin! Yeah!

It shouldn't take too long until I have yet another new PC and this thing will be working as a server for some random crap... :>

    Frag ya' later! ^^

  • I have an Intel iMac, which is:

    CPU: 2GHz Intel Core Duo
    RAM: 2GB
    Graphics: ATI Radeon X1600 w/ 256MB
I usually go with the Low quality settings and get about 100 fps. On many maps, I can get away with Medium quality, but don't want to have to switch back and forth when a new map loads.

I'm using a 5 button mouse and a standard keyboard. My mouse driver is called SteerMouse. If you have a Mac, you need something like this to give you the best control over mouse settings.

I feel like I could use more mouse buttons, so I'm checking on 72 button mices. Well, maybe less than 72, but I need a lot.

  • My main rig's configuration at the uni can be found here http://www.forums.alientrap.local/viewtopi ... =7942#7942

Only change that I've thrown out the 10GB disk (into "lair" ), and now I only have one disk, and I have debian only.

I have an other little pc too at home, but I don't know the exact config of it, but some info can be found about it in the performance section here.
