  • Some time ago, I was part of a clan that tried to excel at CTF and succeeded to a degree I had not anticipated. While part of that clan I volunteered to run training sessions so that others could perhaps learn how to defend flags and shoot the various weaponry we had on-hand.

More recently I ran a "school" once a week in an rpg game I enjoyed playing. I would drop into the pvp arena, ask for people new to pvp to join my & my friend's groups, then teach these new people the art of pvp play as best we could manage for a few hours. The school was relatively successful and we even won some games. Most of all it was fun alot of the time.

I found myself thinking recently that with such an influx of new players perhaps it would benefit others if an informal gathering of people were to meet once in a while to teach these new players how Nexuiz is done. As far as I am aware there is nothing like this set up as of now and I wondered what others thought of the idea.

I have intentionally left the time frame, for the day in question, undetermined as I realize that some days people will show up & other days they will not. Equally I'm sure some days would have this gather last an hour and at other times perhaps a few hours or longer.

  • I've begun creating tutorial videos on basic movement and plan on doing weapon strategies and CTF next. I think a combination of these tutorials and your classes would do wonders for the community as people will be able to enter the class with at least ~some sort~ of knowledge.

I think a weekly class would be nice. Let me know if you need help.

  • One time I was playing ET:QW with my clan (different clan from TSA), and we paired up with assault rifles, and learned to firefight pretty well... One guy would throw a grenade, when it exploded both of us would start shooting at eachother. Just an idea...

  • I take time out a couple nights a week to show newbies the ropes (movement, tactics). I really can't commit to any sort of schedule because of work and personal stuff. However, I will gladly refer the newbies to you folks here on the forum for "classes" rather than teaching them myself.

  • Every week would be great, but it might be hard for some that would be willing to teach to stick to a schedule. The times I would be able to teach would vary pretty wildly.

It might be nice to have a web page where volunteers can post the days/times/servers/subject/teacher where they will be training. This would leave the scheduling a little more freeform and might encourage more to volunteer. For example:

    Nexuiz Training
    Date: November 15, 2007
    Time: 12:00 am GMT
    Server: Training Server 1
Subject: Movement basics, laser jumps, bunny hopping
    Teacher: AceOfThumbs

It would be good to list a GMT converter so everyone would know what the time was in their zone. For example, http://www.timezoneconverter.com/cgi-bin/tzc.tzc

Also, a server set up just for the training would be nice so it wouldn't conflict with regular players. Any server admins want to volunteer?

The domain name nexuiztraining.com is available. It would be nice to be able to say in a game "go to nexuiztraining.com to get hands-on training". The domain name can be pointed to a forum thread so there wouldn't be any extra work to set up the scheduling.

  • aww, do I have to do another site? :D just kidding, I'd be glad to unless someone else takes the job...

Anyways I think it would be great if we got some intermediate to advanced classes going. We could get some of the better players on to help with topics like strategy and movement prediction for one on one matches.

I was actually getting towards this with the whole Nexuiz Ninjaz 'dojo' thing. Dojo is experiencing packet loss however, so it isn't the ~most suitable~ server. However, if no one else can volunteer a server, it's definitely a good fallback.

That fact aside, if you guys are interested in helping out with the whole 'ninja training' thing, I'd be happy to code and host a nice back-end for such a service.

  • I'd sign up for Mirio's class. Which reminds that another good piece of information to include in a class description is something about the teacher (sensei for -z-). Maybe how long they've been playing or what modes they favor in Nexuiz.

  • Please assist me in compiling a list of what needs to be databased and I will tie it into the current Nexuiz Ninjaz framework.

Class Name, Teacher, Description, Start_date, End_date

Should we have some sort of class limit? Should users have to sign up before participating?

  • Maybe a category, or a location (be it irc where further adresses are given, or directly the nex server IP, or whatever location you can think of)

  • Mirio, I probably know all the tricks, but I certainly don't move as fast as you do. It might come down to practice to get the extra speed and height, but maybe you have some tips that would make a difference. I'm definitely still learning. Oh yeah! Wall climbing. I don't wall climb very good at all.

BattleBabe, since you have experience in a formal Nexuiz training environment, maybe you could have a class for teachers. I'd like to know how you go about showing some techniques. Or if it's easy to describe your process in words, please tell us here.

-z-, here is a list of fields that might be useful: Class Name, Teacher, Description, Start_date_time, About_the_teacher. I don't think you'd need an end date, because that would be the same day. For example, I don't think anyone would be having a 3 day class. If the class repeated on another day, that could just be a separate entry. I wouldn't go for sign-ups to begin with. It makes things a little more complicated and may not be necessary. If the classes are packed, though, I guess sign-ups would be needed. Just my 2 cents.

Sorry, I say date out of habbit, it really means time and date, so end date would include the hour.

For those that are serious about making this happen, I have compiled useful information found in this thread to help us get this off the ground. If you offered to teach, it's very important that you check it out.

It'd be nice if we can setup a teamspeak server too.

  • For a "school" style server, I think that teamspeak, or something similar (mumble), would be very helpful. Often times typing is too laborious, especially if one wants to talk while playing. However, that would necessitate designated OPs who could ban people if they got out of hand (XSAX).

The only things I can think of that I excel at are laser//trick jumping (wall climbing, mortar jumping, etc), and use of the RL. I would be delighted to teach what I know about those things, if this pans out.

  • -z- is building a library of demos and videos showing training and tips at nexuizninjaz.com. If you haven't been yet, check it out. It is growing quickly.

He's also volunteered to host a class schedule. Check out this thread if you want to volunteer or have comments:

    Let's keep this idea going.

  • Could you also record some demos and add voice overs. You could describe which keys you're pressing and why.

Then host the demos here on Alientrap, Nexuiz Ninjaz or somehere else with a description of the language, who's involved and where etc.

A while back I looked at a Warsow training video. It was very good but I very quicly realised I needed a third hand to help with the very odd jumping controls.

  • I'm willing to set up a server for this and give the organizer the rcon password to make necessary adjustments as needed. It would not be public.

    Thoughts?
