I think it would be better to just improve the messagemode (t key), add a variant intended for full blown chat, which can send multiple messages until you hit escape or hit enter twice or something...

imo the console is exactly what you'd think it is, a console. typing / all the time is just pointless...

The console is more frequently used for for commands, rather than chat messages; this is why the console is inclined toward commands.

A *very* good illustration of the problem with / prefix commands

Theoretically IRC suffers from the same problem, but in practice it doesn't, probably because the only things you ever send passwords to are nickserv/authserv bots via /msg, and you often script that away.

There's only incy-vincy problem with chat mode...

Irrc there's no GNU keyboard buttons above you, so no-one can see you're typing, so you don't have a chance to avoid type-killing...
