  • Hello everyone,

I am a student from Chicago. I have to develop a game for one of my classes.
I wanted to ask the experts over here if it is feasable to develop an FPS game. I am a Computer Science student and have a decent but not exceptional programming ability.I also have a partner in my team who is quite good at programming.

Our professor has advised us against trying to develop a 3d FPS game.

Im sorry if i sound too amateurish.

    Bye,
    Kunal

  • Well... You could grab one of the open-source engines out there then throw in some freely available content (textures, models, etc.) and whip up a few maps, but you'll have trouble getting further than that in just three months.

I think he is supposed to code the engine. Otherwise it would be a pointless exercise for a CS student. Good exercise for a CG student though

  • I thank Taiyo and F0ruq3 for your replies.
The professor doesnt want us to write a game engine in particular. He just wants a running game. Thats it.

Can you please suggest any open source game engines that have good documentation and tutorials?

I would just like to mention that my most intense interest is in developing better Artificial Intelligence for games. My project partner however is adamant about building a snooker game. I dont see how I can develp any AI for a snooker game. Any comments about this would be appreciated too.

    Thanks,

  • what i would do is:
learn to create maps with gtkradiant for nexuiz, very easy.
Create a new mod (like nexuiz) for darkplaces, shoudlnt be that hard, just dont make any cool features, running around with one gun is already cool enough.
From that on it shouldnt be that hard, adding a monster, new waepons. there are enogh tutorials about the quake engine out there (that should also apply for darkplace).
