  • I'm happy to say that I DON'T have the water problem any more with client side movement prediction with the 3rd May hotfix :D. In fact, I think gameplay is much smoother now (I found the releases between 22nd April and 3rd May (non-inclusive) much slower). Great work!

  • You open the .zip file and for extraction you choose the same path as its already installed into.. the zip tool should then ask if it shall overwrite the old files.. just say yes.

BTW the mac texture bug should be fixed now once and for all..

  • Hi,

I am experiencing lag with the 05/05 hotfix. What steps should I try to reduce or eliminate the lag? I usually get 10-20 percent packet loss.

    Thanks!

Yep, I'm pretty sure. I don't have anything downloading at the same time.

EDIT: I turned off my anti-virus. A little better, but not quite enough. I kept getting bounced around like a pinball for a little bit, then I return to normal. Turning off client side movement prediction helped, but then I feel like I'm skating around on ice a little bit.

Are there any console commands for me to try?

  • Well more convincing would be 'i tried 2.4 and the hotfix in paralell and each time i tried the hotfix my ping/packetloss was bad' but so far i just can't belive thats the case..
Did anything else change? FPS? Or cpu usage? And actually i meant that maybe someone else was downloading on your line.

I got the same problem in 2.4 as I did in 2.4.1. Nothing else changed. I do notice that with packet loss, my FPS drops until it hits about 30 FPS, then shoots up to around 300 when back to normal.

EDIT: I checked the CPU usage with 2.4.1 (I don't have 2.4 anymore), and it's between 90-99 percent all the time. I did upgrade from the integrated GeForce 6100 to the PCI-E 8400GS. Not sure if that makes a difference. However, the FPS shot up tenfold with the new card.

  • Well having reread your posts.. Do you get PL 20-30 in general or JUST with Nexuiz 2.4 or the hotfix? Or is your connection that unstable in general?

Basicly try to ping the server in the shell and see if you also get such packetloss there. Basicly there is nothing any game can do about that kind of packetloss if its from the connection.
If its a bug it might be fixed though..

Then are you sure you installed the hotfix correctly? Do you see the right date in the console?

    Hi,

    A few notes and observations:

    1) Noticeable packet loss has been happening since I got my new video card. This has never been a problem on my older, slower video card.
    2) Increasing the level of detail actually decreases my problems with lag and bouncing around by decreasing the FPS output on my video card. I've never had that problem with my older and slower video card.
    3) This problem only crops up when I am connected to a server. It does not happen in campaign mode.
    4) No other games have this problem, nor did any other application have this problem.
    5) Yes, the hotfix has been installed correctly. All modified files have May-05-2008 on them, and the console reports May-05-2008.
    6) I installed the original 2.4 on another place on my HD, and I got the 90-99 percent CPU usage.

    Now my question to you:

My observations led me to conclude that there may be something screwy about the inability of my computer to send packets to the server fast enough to keep things in sync. If I could get things in sync between my computer and the server, I would not have the lag, the bouncing around, or the feeling of being pinned in one place unable to move or fire. Should I be capping the FPS on my video card, or should I be modifying some network settings?

Thanks for your continuing help with this!

This is clearly a case of overloading your outgoing connection speed, please try changing cl_netfps in the console, the default value of 20 seems pretty harmless though, you can try 10 if you want (it will still send your input immediately when you fire).

You can also try changing the rate variable in the console, but there is no separate upload speed variable so this isn't very useful for this case.

99-100% cpu usage is normal for a game.

cl_netfps is the only setting I can think of that could have an effect, other than capping your FPS (cl_maxfps and/or vid_vsync 1).

I recommend playing with vid_vsync 1 because it makes aiming a little smoother.

That requires the server+client to use latest svn/hotfix (or future builds).

Wouldn't generally all serious testing require hotfixed servers? When I tried all the 2.4 prereleases, everything went fine, and when 2.4 final was out and the servers were updated, so many things were just different, while the best playable servers for the 2.4 clients are still the ones that run 2.3 :?

  • There's this thing, that during Player Setup the colors are swapped.
Pants Color is in fact Shirt Color and Shirt Color is Pants Color. You can see this with chase_active 1. Just a minor bug, I suppose.

Not a menu bug, but a model bug.. try different models and you will see.

Thought if you have time to test all models and report which ones have it the wrong way currently we could correct them :)

@ Urmel: Do you still have those problems with the 2.4.1 client??

  • I don't know esteel. Generally no, sometimes yes. I've got 4 Nexuiz 2.4x directories on my rig, and I lost my overview which one is hotfixed and which not and with which hotfix exactly. After all no 2.4 server is as good as the 2.3 servers who disappear one by one.

I have to confess I don't care too much about it anymore. atm I don't play ladder matches (why should I? If it goes on like it is, I'll become #1 by just staying there) and wait for the next version to be released. Caused by the lack of hotfixed servers, I stopped all testing about a month ago. Sry. I started several threads and nobody (or hardly anybody) cared or answered. I accept that - no offences - but - How could I help you if I'm not helped to help you?

I took some time to test all the models I have on my PC. Please note that there may be some mistakes, I'm a bit tired after some stupid trouble at work. I've included the custom models in the hope that they may also be corrected if required.

    Abyss [custom] - OK?
    Angelyss [custom] - OK
Carni - OK? (tatoos are in shirt color)
    Armored Carni - OK
Dark [custom] - NOT OK? (hair is pants color, the rest is in shirt color)
    Felicia [custom] - OK
    Fricka - NOT OK
Grunt - SUBJECT TO DEBATE (clothing is shirt color and armor is pants color; but the armor is like his shirt...)
    Headhunter - OK
Heroine - NOT OK? (really hard to tell)
    Insurrectionist - NOT OK
Jaguar [custom]- OK? (mostly shirt color, joints are pants color)
    Leilei [custom] - OK?
    Lurk - OK
    Lycanthrope - NOT OK
    Marine - OK
Mulder - HARD TO TELL (the head is in pants color)
Nexus - OK? (mostly pants color)
    Pyria - NOT OK
    Quark - OK
    Reptile - NOT OK
    Shock Trooper - NOT OK
    Skadi - NOT OK
    Specop - OK
Spy [custom]- OK? (only pants color)
Suiseiseki [custom] - OK (only shirt color)
    Xolar - OK?

[ ! ! ] The OK and NOT OK things are with the current way the menu is done.

Mmkay, now I'll press Submit and move on to checking my post.

    [edit]: Check finished.

I did the following in console:

    vid_vsync 1
    cl_netfps 25

The lower the cl_netfps, the worse the lag. 25 worked rather nicely. Thanks a lot for your help! I can enjoy Nexuiz again! :)

Lower cl_netfps causes more lag but less packet loss, you were speaking of high packet loss on the scoreboard (in my opinion anything over 1% is high, and it should always be 0%).
