  • Thx for this fix!
I have played the whole SP-Campaign without any problems.
Also some MP matches were working fine.

No thats not normal.. Well as i said i'm not that familiar with mac but it seems you still did something wrong. Have you copied the Nexuiz and Nexuiz.SDL Application too? I tried to make the first post more clear.. does that info help?

jewce wrote:one question tho 2.3 allowed me to play mixed (lms, rune, tdm etc.) map multiplayer not so 2.4, was this planned? thank you for your hard work and dedication.

No, that feature got removed as it was hardly used and was a kind of gross hack. You can however use a cron task or something to change the g_dm, g_tdm, g_ctf and so on variables from time to time :)

ender.saka wrote:For drivers you should complain ATI and Nvidia. Bundle drivers made by Apple works for most of the cases, thoug I do not know if they are top of quality. Apart this ATI and Nvidia do not produce any up to date drivers. Last drivers produced by ATI are for PPC only, for example. It is quite sad!

Well you can see how well your drivers work by looking at your HUD problem. Thats clearly a problem in the graphic drivers.. Well, an idea not sure it would change anything: try changing r_glsl_use_generic (1 is default now, 0 should be more similar to 2.3 rendering)

ender.saka wrote:For cross compile I don't know. Though I am surprised that there is no compiler supporting Mach-O binaries. For headers you can simply take them from a Mac user. Or better find someone able to compile/maintain Nexuiz on to his Mac (maybe I can give you some little help if you want, I know a little developing in C and I am expert Java developers, currently I am studing Obj-C).

Well we have a machine to compile it on but currently noone of the devs uses a mac as his main machine. As i said they are quite expensive, at last in € Land :) But having a mac maintainer for the engine would be very good!

ender.saka wrote:3) Still lag. Even if now, FPS is (almost) back to 2.3 performances, I still see not smooth FPS, and I have a little problems with network response. Same problems as I wrote in my thread about those problems.

Can you please also make sure that the engine got updated? The date in the ingame console (shift-escape). And please also see if my updated first post is now clearer.

    Thanks

    yeah it worked thx.

and this is the same one, a few seconds later on the same server, without the hotfix:
    Image

except the hotfix there's no difference in config.cfg or autoexec.cfg

    This is strange, isn't it?

Another thing I'd like to post here is a short demo, watch the faster movements: http://urmel.planetnexuiz.de/Demos/stut ... oves01.dem

All demos I record when playing online are more or less behaving like that, unlike the ones I record when playing local which run completely shmoof. No matter btw if hotfixed or not.

  • The netgraph just reflects the behaviour change of the revised netcode. It now sends input packets at a fixed (rather low) rate and sends extra packets for e.g. pressed buttons. The old behaviour was to send a packet for each incoming packet.

Thanks. I do not know what a "poser-yuppies" is but I can imagine the kind of compliment considering you prefixed it with "fucking".
I am one of the "Mac Community". There are stupid persons in the "Mac Community" like in any other community. Personally I met a bunch of ignorant stupids in the Linux and Windows communities too.

Apart this, though, I still have a lot of problems with Nexuiz. The console says "Nexuiz Mac OS X 02:43:52 Mar 12 2008". It seems ok to me.

I will give a glance to the source code. Thanks.

  • Oh, yes! And I forgot to say that any change I make to audio preferences do not keep saved if I relaunch Nexuiz, and I suspect that changing the audio preferences do not take place anyway.

The audio keeps solid at 48 KHz and 2 channels. :?

EDIT: I gave a glance at the source code and I saw that Client and Server are implemented in QC. I do not know anything of that scripting language, and considering that I think that the latency problem could be corrected in the Client/Server part I am not able to adjust it in short time. I do not know if there is a way to intervene directly in the C code. For shaders the problem is probably resolvable, but I have some tests.

  • 3/17 update broke nexuiz for me. I am on a dual core 4200+ with a nvidia gt 8600 latest drivers. Using arch linux, so my system is up to date.

All I see now when logging on is a huge checkerboard pattern for the BG and and all the buttons and mouse are squares with checkerboard graphics. 3/12 update worked for me and fixed a few things but this version is completely busted for me. :(

    What information do u need?

  • Hello, I'm new to the forums and Nexuiz.

First off let me say what a fantastic game you have here.

    Regarding the subject at hand:

I can confirm that the patch you have listed as "nexuizhotfix-NEWEST.zip" with md5 of 043bdbe1e5f2f5c696070979e5aa0e93 (no md5's seems to be the norm here for binaries is that policy or over-sight?) seems to make life much better for the 'hiccup' I'll call it for version 2.4 binary release on both Debian "Lenny" and Slackware ver 12.0 on the *same* pc and hardware.

Debian Lenny (alpha released this week) has an older version in the repo so I packagized my own, initially the 'hiccup' was utterly brutal, this patch has tremendously helped for it. Both of them do still have a slight, and I mean very slight hiccup, that is noticable, but it's not like before where the whole game seemed like it just locked up the pc.

It is important for me to note I am using the latest 'beta' binary blobs from ATI for my video card (and we all know what ATI/gnu/lin combo's mean) for Lenny & Slackware. My FPS at 1280x1024 is about 150 or so on average.

I'd say the patch/fix is almost there, that is, if we assume my ATI drivers are working correctly. That's a large assumption tho. But almost.

Regarding the "showbrand 0"; where exactly would that go for a gnu/linux OS? I grepped my Nexuiz directory itself and it appears hardcoded in the games elf's. I put it at the bottom of ~/.nexuiz/data/config.cfg and the game _does_ launch without branding, however, the next time I re-launch the game the branding is back.

Lastly, in another thread one of the admin's here advised how to hard code into the config your Hz of your monitor in lieu of the safe "60". I modified my config to be 85 (the same as Xorg is using) and right away visible tearing went away. As I'm not thoroughly conviced that either ATI or even xrandr exten of Xorg is perfect yet, this 'tweak' if you will, has helped with not only this game, but others as well. In fact, I even found that if I use 1280x1024 resolution, the native display size that my desktop uses, that too gives me higher fps , then if I used 1024x768. As to why, I dont know, but I'm not going to lose sleep on it. I know this is slightly off topic, but I did want to put it here as combined with the patch/fix, this has drastically reduced my choppines/hiccup and smoothed out the gameplay.

  • If you read my first post, it mention to just use the name of the datapatch*.pk3 file as the hotfix does not get updated that often and md5 sum is larger and only readily accessible on linux (and maybe mac?). For the normal version the version string (2.4 or similar is good enough) and as this hotfix is only there for testing but not mass consumption i think there is no need to make a bug fuss like md5sum about it. Also i for example do not use the hotfix very often but rather update from the source repository directly so the DATE is of more use to me.

Well a slight hickup might be caused by the visual effects of tearing if vsync is off? The thing with 60 vs 85 hz is funny because the default is to let X (or what ever display you use) choose the defaults, would be interesting to know why your graphic driver choose 60hz..

showbrand is NOT a saved variable.. meaning when you exit nexuiz the config.cfg will be rewritten but only with saved variables. Either you make it a saved variable by using seta (set archive) or by using ~/.nexuiz/data/autoexec.cfg which is read at startup but NEVER written so its the right place for such stuf..

  • Hi esteel,

Just so you know, I wasn't meaning to break chops on the md5, I'm just used to seeing them for linux related binaries is all.

Not to harp, just for convesation, mac yes, md5 is available. Actually there are numerous apps for Windows, sadly in the Windows userland it's not customary. I like hksfv & hashtab (edit: both free as in beer not as in speech) and there's numerous others at sites like download dot com.

Regarding vsync, yes I do have that option off in my cfg. If I enable that, my xserver totally locks up. The default for the game was to have it off IIRC. That lockup with vsync on happens in debian etch, debian lenny and Slackware 12. All three of which, are using ATI's latest ati-driver-installer-8-3-x86.x86_64

That driver is still considered beta, but is actually the best I've encountered yet certainly not without their bugs tho so far.

If there's any information that you'd like me to post to help find as to why the game is started using 60hz I'm more than happy to help gather / report it back to you. Do you have anything specific you'd like for me to do?

  • I do not know that much about the inner workings of the engine or drivers.. maybe one of the engine guys can shed some light on the issue.

However i would like everyone to give the current hotfix and maybe the one tomorrow (if there is a new one) some really good testing as i think this is pretty close to 2.4.1 now.
This is like the last chance to report bugs before 2.4.1 is out. Report now or keep silent when 2.4.1 does not work alright for you :D

I'm not sure about the 32/64 bit library issues, we are using a 'real' debian etch system now..
The same goes for the mac sound problems..
    Please test again![/b]

no, I believe whenever it did happen it was on a 2.4 server. I could be wrong, but I do know for a fact that the time it happened on a minstagib server, the server was running 2.4.

  • Well the remaining problems are either not directly Nexuiz related (problem with the tourney mode, though this NEEDS to be looked at! or the map from the mappack..)
Or are not bad (black edges, texture warning, bot+jumppad)
Or have a bit too few information (crash)

However can you confirm the demo viewangle bug is gone? I think it was fixed in the engine..

  • 2.4 worked well for me already, but I spent 5 minutes or so with the patch on a Mac Pro ATI x1900. It seems to work well. I didn't notice any lag problem. The HUD still spins sometimes with GL 2.0 on, but I get good framerates with GL 2.0 off anyway, so it isn't a problem for me.

I've found that disabling multithread GL was the most important performance tweak for me, so other Mac users might want to try this if they haven't yet.

The last engine I tried out was the engine revision 8208

The only thing I can confirm is that this demo viewangle choppyness is NOT fixed in this version yet.

EDIT: I tried the latest hotfix.

Choppy viewangles STILL is a problem. And please don't tell me that I am the only one on this earth who has this problem, this is ridiculous :D

  • I've downloaded 2008-03-21 hotfix and it properly running on my Debian Etch. But, for example when a bot respawned or when I'm aimed anybody and frags him, rendering is abruptly for a little time. When I'm shooting to a wall or to the sky no "lags" there.

  • Ah, I remembered a bug.
It's actually no big deal, but sometimes, when I finish a game (gamestop & scoreboard), the weapon I'm holding is flickering by flashing from the lower right corner (where it belongs to) to the upper right corner of the screen. Don't think, I saw this behavior in 2.3 before. :?

  • have you changed models? some of them give a 'whoopee' when they score. throwing both arms up, and the weapon with it. ive seen this since i started with 2.3. is this only at the end of the game when everyone is frozen? have you almost always just scored the winning frag? coincidence? i think not. frag on!

  • That weapon bug is know.. it happens when you (try to) switch guns right at the moment the game ends. No fix for that sofar, but it not a big problem..

However i have no idea what jewce is talking about. What i can imaging is that those players are jumping right at the moment the game ends.. i think some jumping anims have raised arms..

  • Wow. I didn't have the chance to try it before now (had computer problems), but I have to congratulate you guys, this hotfix is amazing here. Got a new vid card this morning and played all day with 2.4 then an hour ago decided to give the hotfix try. My fps went from 200 to 400-500 and playing with cl_netfps 72 is AMAZINGLY SMOOTH. I swear it's like a completely new game. My mouse and movement keys are so responsive I can hardly believe it, it's almost making me dizzy, it's like the game can predict where I'm gonna move/aim a fraction of a second before I actually do. OMGUGDUGJHGJG jumping around on an empty server I'm almost crying of joy.
