  • This is something that has been bugging me for a while.

I think it's absurd that the Nexuiz weapons are so colorful. In no other game does the weapon turn a bright hue when you pick it up- it looks laughable, like a children's toy.

I think that it would be much better if the weapons stayed a neutral color- like they are before they are picked up-

Now doesn't that look much more badass than if the whole side is plastered with red or blue of pink? I mean, there are other ways to indicate the team someone is on- a HUD icon, for example.

Now, my other question is, how is the coloration of the weapon defined? Is there a .tga somewhere that defines where the weapon is colored that I could change? I want my weapons grey and black, dammit! :D

And seriously, why do the weapons need to be colored? The entire player is a uniform color- it's not like the enemy won't be able to distinguish friend from foe if their weapon is gunmetal grey.

But how will YOU know what team YOU are on?

  • It's a good, quick indicator of teams. It's much better than cluttering up the HUD with a team indicator. I really don't think it looks all that bad, but maybe colored weapons could be disabled in FFA DM where it doesn't really serve a purpose to color them.

  • The colors are no big problem imo. What makes them look like children's plastic toys are the reflections. They're too plane for a metallic gloss.
That amount of reflections may look cool on characters (for it's making them look more comic-styled) but the weapons need to have another kind of reflection. Kinda more slim and with more edges. Like car paint.
Don't ask me how to achieve this :P

  • Okay okay, another argument would be, "How would you know which team the weapon came from?"

I can imagine some instances where this would be quite important, i.e. you find a weapon in your base.

Errrm, why would that matter? I've never wondered where my weapons came from.

  • I think the colors displayed on the weapons should be toned down a bit in saturation. Problem solved. I personally like the colors, gives the game overall a very 'sporty' feeling imo.

Then you aren't utilizing all available data.

Knowing whether the weapon came from the blue team or the red team could determine your next move.

Example: You have 30 health, on the blue team and you're in the center of the map, you just heard a battle and you see a blue mortar resting on the ground. This situation would make me more cautious than if it were a red weapon.

  • Probably not. I'm going to disable mine in all games- I can look at the scoreboard once at the beginning and remember what team I am on.

  • Because gaming is a visual experience, and some of us are concerned with how the game looks, instead of ONLY raw, unadulterated gameplay.

  • I think that the coloration helps new players to find out at which team they are, even if there are some other things implemented, which will help him here. But it is also interesting for new players to know, what weapon they are holding, which cant work if any weapon looks like a toy because of colors. I can only agree that coloration is not needed for deathmatch, but in teamgames it is useful right now.

Very tough spot, because this discussion is break even for pro and contra. Always bad to get the best final result. My only good idea would be, make the weapons without colors but add therefor a small teamoverlay somewhere on the screen (maybe top right). Let the new timer (bottom left) be in your teamcolor. Just add some other "hints" at which team you are at when weaponcolors will be removed. Maybe use [GF]HarryButt idea ... I guess I am the last one to ask if it is about effects/eyecandy visuals :D (I only watch high and nice effects when I look up some demos at times, never play on that settings)

  • "let it be a cvar! :D )

I'm positive on the idea, remove the weapon coloration on deathmatch, and let the player decide how his weapon coloration behaves in teamplay. Or that would require CSQC again?

  • WTF people, I pushed hard to get the colored weapons idea through! I think it's amazingly awesome to be able to see the colors you picked for your character on your gun as well, it's a wicked personalization feature!

Now, on a completely different subject, the weapons look like ass, and the colors are bland and stupid. The colorized parts of the skins cover too much of the weapon. I think they should be mostly a base color of some sort (grey), with accents of the colors you picked, or teamcolor, depending on gamemode. If this was true, and the colors were more vibrant and cool, not washed out sad stuff, I doubt you people would complain. I have a much cooler colormap I could donate...

  • Well i kinda aggree, most of the weapons show too much color, maybe some of the modelers can take a look at them? The laser is imo also one of the guns were its ok, or the crylink. But the Mortar IS too much! :D

The player skins are a bit different. On FFA modes i think its ok to only have some colorful parts but in teammodes they really should be CLEARY visible in their teams color.
