  • Hi guys,

I just had a go on the latest version of Nexuiz, and it seems like it's coming along great since I last played it 6 months ago. I'm not really sure what it is, it just seems to run a lot smoother on my machine, and a few things just seem more impressive. e.g. explosions, blood, weapons, maps etc. So nice work! Some constructive criticism:

    1. Being able to change the amount of gibs is awesome! But when you put it at the maximum, it'd be even better if it spewed out loads more.
    2. Having dead bodies stay would be a cool option. It'd be great to have loads of corpses everywhere.
    3. Any chance you could make the explosions louder? Currently if you shoot a rocket you can barely hear the explosion over the sound of the rocket firing. That said they do look awesome now.
    4. Some of the weapons could do with being a bit louder/ more dramatic when you fire them.
    5. Oh and if when people are gibbed they let out a really loud "AAARRRGGGHHH!!" scream that would be funny. It sounds crazy but if you've seen Army of Darkness you'll know that kind of thing is hilarious!

Anyway like I said it's coming along great and is a definite improvement over how it was, so good work dudes.

  • I don't like the scream idea

    about the corpses...: eggandbacon
i think that's the best argument against it I can find
... yes, it actually is an argument against it ...

Dito. A little more boom-factor would be nice. The MG has the weakest sounds imho. Followed by the Crylink.

I've seen all Evil Deads and yup, it's definitely hilarious. I loved this feature in the Unreal Tournament games.
Personally I'd like to have "realistic" hitsounds instead of the Quake-ish beeps on impact. It's not very functional, but it adds more to the athmosphere of the game if done right. This is another part, I loved about UT. Hearing the screams and gunfire out of a distance. Open Arena combines both. It could be an option, like the gibs count.
Hitsounds: Authentic - Minimalistic - None ... or something...

Just launch another rocket at the gib piles ;)

Indeed, but that would eat FPS.

bengreenwood wrote:3. Any chance you could make the explosions louder? Currently if you shoot a rocket you can barely hear the explosion over the sound of the rocket firing. That said they do look awesome now.

Yes, the rocket explosion does sound rather tame. A cracking boom with oodles of subwoofer-shaking rumble seems appropriate.

Yup. The shotgun and machinegun especially.

Well, pain/death sounds may be appropriate, but I don't know how anyone would scream when their lungs, mouths and vocal chords are smeared across the map

Believe me, you get used to it. So stop thinking. :P It worked in UT99.

  • I completely agree that the kill/hit sounds need to be redone. Our hit/frag sounds should be more like UT- the current ones sound stupid.

  • Since most characters in Nexuiz are non-human this should be no problem. The robot sounds in UT2k3/2k4 sound pretty cool imho.
As I already mentioned, it should be an option.

Playing Q3 without screen and its like a pr0n movie...(exept with orb ^^)

I like the beep and scruitch of nexuiz.

The beep and scruitch suck. I think we could compromise and have a "PG" option with no grunts. :D

Nexuiz is an orgy of death and violence. Keep it pornographic!

  • Maybe we could have an option called "urrrg arrrrg hooooo". That would be pretty funny. Also I think it would be good if your own character screamed when you take damage, and maybe started breathing heavy when you're close to death.

I actually know a few really good semi-professional voice actors on the internet. Maybe I could ask them to provide some screams. Or maybe we could have a contest, that could be funny.

    2. Having dead bodies stay would be a cool option. It'd be great to have loads of corpses everywhere.

Taiyo.uk: 3. Indeed, but that would eat FPS.

Yeah but you know, everything's a sacrifice. Might there be a way have an option to render the corpses with less detail so that you could have more of them about? I really think this would add something new, in terms of making the game feel like an absolute bloodbath! Like the big levels in Doom 2 where you had bodies everywhere.

Any chance you could make the explosions louder? Currently if you shoot a rocket you can barely hear the explosion over the sound of the rocket firing. That said they do look awesome now.

Taiyo.uk: 3. Yes, the rocket explosion does sound rather tame. A cracking boom with oodles of subwoofer-shaking rumble seems appropriate.

Maybe there could even be some screen-shake if one happens close to you? BTW Like I said I really like how the explosions are coming along. The sprites look awesome now.

    4. Some of the weapons could do with being a bit louder/ more dramatic when you fire them.

Taiyo.uk: Yup. The shotgun and machinegun especially.

I think maybe if the models were a bit bigger, it might make them seem more powerful. Also, the muzzle flash could be better too. Maybe I could re-draw it? I drew this a while ago:

Anyway thanks for all the responses guys- especially people agreeing with me.

  • If screams/grunts/etc were ever added, they'd have to be an option. It would just be way too annoying to have to hear that all the time. I'm already sick of hearing Torus tell me about flag captures and the few times that I've played WSW, the sounds have driven me crazy.

Something better than a pacman blip might be in order, but subtle nonetheless.

  • This option actually might be more interesting for casual gamers then for pros.
For my part, I like torus announcer more then the old one. And I'd like to hear some varying sounds instead of the same beeps.

  • Still, got to enjoy it when you hit the different limits for frags. Those sounds are ace. "HOLY SHIT" and what not.
Possibly not the worst mapper in the world.

  • Well those ideas (more gibs, gibs n body stay, stupid scream (scnr)) could be made possible when Nexuiz does use CSQC in the future to allow for more client side control of the game. Like if you change that setting now it only does something when you really connect to a game. So if you disable them and watch the demo later the gibs are gone forever. With more clientside control the server could just signal "need gibs here" and the client and then either not display them or as many as you want..
As for the sounds thats taste, i like them quite much as they are :)

  • Esteel, that's awesome. So do you think these features might get implemented then? I really think they would make Nexuiz unique, because no other shooters have these options, as far as I'm aware.
