  • TK471 stopping by... I finally got around to getting 2.4.2, after 'upgrading' to Ubuntu 8.04 on a P4 2.4Ghz box, with Nvidia 256MB 6200 card and 1GB RAM... ok, not a powerhouse, given this is now ancient hardware, but man does Nexuiz look and play great... and rain! I see rain in there! and low-grav minstagib is crazy! OK... I may have to practice a bit and get back into a few games (when I can... I work a lot). I don't think I'm going to make any more maps though... it was fun learning how, and I can say I did it, but I think that's all I needed, just to say 'yeah, I could learn that'. Nexuiz rocks! :D

  • Oh, it's been a while, I tried 2.4, tried to run a server at home for testing like I did with 2.3, couldn't get that to work... and then I just got busy with work and home, and etc. So I didn't notice the rain! I love the new weapons and effects too, and I also saw the 'capture the base' mode, with the white icons that turn blue/red (was that around before? That's not CTF, is it?) I was happy to see my warehouse map still loaded fine :D I'll have to check out the new maps that have been being made. Oh, I dig the character looks too, how do I describe... kind of 'anime' colored, maybe?

I had downloaded 2.4.2 after seeing a floating notification in 2.4 (which I had installed from Ubuntu repository). Would it be easier for users, to have an 'upgrade' option from within the game? Or would that mess up the package state in Ubuntu (whatever distro) if someone decided to apt-get remove (or synaptic, or whatever) later (who would do that?) Just a thought as I ramble on...

    Won't happen for serval reasons:
    1) you'd need to run nexuiz as root or with setuid enabled to have in order to write/replace files, which would be evil...
    2) yes, it would mess up package management
    3) installation paths are different in each distro, some are even patching the binaries in stead of using a shell script to tell the engine where the data files are.
