Hello

I have the latest version of Nixuiz up and running on my Vista desktop. However I have recently started to experiment with Linux and at the moment my Laptop is running Ubuntu 8.04.

Seeing as I'm using Ubuntu I installed the game by using the Synaptic Package Manager. When I started to play I got a little window stating that there was a new update 2.4.2. Problem is that because I'm so new to this game and Linux in general I don't know what to do from here.

Could somebody please help me to update this game which is on a linux laptop?

Just download the update you need and unpack it straight into the Nexuiz folder. Or you could just download the entire game (first link on the URL below). Then just unpack and start the game.

Now there's the problem for me, I have no idea where Linux hides stuff. I'm quite fine with microsoft and know where the programs file is but unfortunately I'm stuffed with Linux.

Any chance of helping a lemming out?

Well, you could go the the Synaptic Package manager and uninstall Nexuiz from there, then download the whole thing, 2.4.2, from the Nexuiz page and unzip it to the destination of your choosing. Now I'm not on Linux at the moment so I cannot say where they hide those things. Perhaps someone else might help out with that.

Ho well, it was worth a try.

I downloaded the zip file, put it into my home folder and extracted the contents. I tried clicking on the exe icon and nothing happened.

In a command line shell you can do the following steps:

Uninstall the ubuntu version:

Code: Select all

sudo -s "aptitude remove nexuiz nexuiz-data"

Extract the zip file into your home directory:

Code: Select all

unzip -x  filename.zip

Link it to a bin directory:

Code: Select all

sudo -s "ln -s $HOME/Nexuiz/nexuiz-linux-glx.sh /usr/local/bin/nexuiz"

Now you should be able to start it by typing nexuiz in the command line.

There are many ways to do this, but the simplest way is to download the latest version from Sourceforge (use the mirror closest to you) then unzip it in your home folder and run it from there.

wget [download link]
unzip nexuiz-242.zip
./nexuz/nexuiz-linux-i686-sdl (or nexuiz-linux-x86_64-sdl if you're using a 64 bit system)

You can't run programs or games with the .exe ending, that's for Windows. Linux uses shell and "normal' run commands. There are some files named 'nexuiz-linux-sdl.sh', 'nexuiz-linux-glx.sh', 'nexuiz-linux-686-sdl' and so on. Try one of those (which is specific to your Linux distro like Taiyo.uk mentions). If you have a normal 32-bit Linux use the ones without the '64'-ending, if you have 64 then use them.

I don't remember which specific file you should run so I would go with Taiyo's advice and try the nexuiz-linux-686-sdl and/or nexuiz-linux-686-glx version.

All your settings, downloaded maps, demos, screenshots and videos should be in ".nexuiz/data" in your home directory. Just in case you didn't know yet, Linux files that begin with "." are hidden. To see them from the command line, use "ls -a".

And there is a setting to show hidden files (just like in Windows) graphically if you prefer that. However there are so many hidden files in your standar /home directory that I think it's not worth displaying the hidden files unless you really need to do something with them. To display them there's (I believe) a similar way to go about doing that as on Windows.
