• If you have http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php, you can add Nexuiz to it. Then, in game you can press shift + tab, or whatever you have set, and you will get chat/voicechat, etc. ofcource your friends, and or clan will have to have steam too.

• Some of us have been experimenting with Mumble since it is the most cross-platform of the bunch (though you have to jump through some hoops for it to work on the mac) plus it's open-source.

I'm running a mumble server right now (the server is called "murmur") but we haven't fully tested it out yet. After setting up proper channels and users, I plan to let some of the clans use it for their voice chat if they like. So far, mkzelda reports that his gameplay slows considerably when someone speaks to him. Hopefully, he can upgrade a library or something to help that out.

Due to it being open source, there was talk of integrating muble with nexuiz. Unfortunately, there are major technical hurdles for that. I'm not sure where that goal stands right now. I guess it's theoretically doable, but challenging.

I'm not sure about the other programs (though I tested Ventrillo and it didn't do this by default), but Mumble has a screen overlay feature that will display your teammate's names on your screen and highlight the person who is currently speaking. I'm told that there is a way to adjust the font-size and color of the overlay text through editing some xml file. By default, it's quite large on the screen.

Supposedly, teamspeak has a reliable linux client and server and an unofficial mac client (called teamspeex or something like that) but I haven't read any feedback on it yet.

configuration -> settings. 1st) check 'expert config' at the lower left, then 2nd) go to pane 'overlay' and have fun with adjusting font(-size) and/or colors.

never got ts to work properly under linux despite all the guides, tutorials and how-tos, so, for me, mumble ftw

• dyin, have you setup a murmur server before?
If so, then I could probably use your input :-)

• Apparantly there's a specific software that allows me to use binds for voice to automatically speak to my team based on my binds.

Does anyone know any more about this?

• Gee steam...

Seriously, who's going to install STEAM to get voice chat on Nexuiz...

STEAM!

That would be a bit dumb, wouldn't it? Unless you like massive CPU and memory usage for something opensource software can do waaaay better.

I agree.
I don't understand why anybody would use that bloated piece of software in the first place and most Nex players are fairly computer savy from what i have seen and know better so stay away from programs like Steam.
This isn't a CS forum, This is Nexuiz
One of the reasons that I like this game is that the majority of the people who play are respectful to other players, sure there are idiots but for the most part I'ts a good community..
Maybe because Nex seems to attract older players that have seen all the BS that has gone on with online gaming for years.

As far as Mumble goes I'm a big fan of the program, I have never noticed slowdowns while speaking however i could see the possibility of that if someone in the U.S. was speaking to a Euro .

• I hope there will be a voice chat module added in Nexuiz itsself (like the one in UT2004) so external applications won't be needed to voice chat in the game. Also, my best recommendation for voice chat until then would be teamspeak, which is used in many services and from what I seen it works really well.

• Only clan has a TS2 server running - you can get the address from the motd on our nex server, feel free to join. We pay for the server so it performs very well. I just wish they'd release TS3 already so the sound quality can improve (hopefully as good as Ventrilo). Also, Teamspeak Overlay works perfectly in nex if you want to see who's talking at any given time.

• I just learned of this cross-platform GPL'd voice chat software.

http://www.voicechatter.org/

Anyone ever use this before?

Voice Chatter is a free, cross-platform voice communication (chat) application. It was designed with gaming in mind, but can be used for many other purposes.

Why write Voice Chatter? Because there is no voice communication application that I am aware of that has excellent voice quality, AND supports all major platforms (Windows, Linux, Mac). I am a Linux hobbiest, and I would like to play games on it. However, the the two most popular applications either don't support Linux or have inferior voice quality.

• Someone in IRC mentioned that this is like a mumble clone, so then they asked why not just use mumble?

I'm not sure if it is functionally the same (or the same in terms of quality), but it could be easier to integrate into Nexuiz than Mumble. From what I understood from Div, the mumble code was a bit complicated to integrate because of how they chose to design the software.

Also, I know of one person (mkzelda) that experienced serious lag during gameplay when someone would speak using mumble. Perhaps this program uses more efficient methods/codecs.

Mumble NOW also has mac binaries on their homepage. There was mac support for a long time, just no precompiled binaries. But I'll have to check if the mumble server on planetnexuiz.de needs an update :)

There is a Mumble server?
Damn, i gotta check th forum more often.
Any chance John Galt could run a mumble server? i know it's asking ALOT from him and we all thank you for running the servers you put up, if ya do run one i would be happy to pitch in a few bucks to help out, and I believe others would as well.
The only problem I see is Galts is very international, could be a language problem.

on a side note, I hate RedstarRepublic

Server setup is also much easier than mumble's murmur. I can easily integrate this into Nexuiz Server Toolz.

Not so much with murmur...

• Yes, I setup a mumble server a couple nights ago. Well, mkzelda had started setting up the server a few months ago, but it didn't get finished. So I finished up the config and started adding users.

I currently have 83 users added and I have about another 30-40 more to go on my list. I'm still working out the permission settings of it. It's very time consuming. I'll announce more about it after I get things ironed out.
