I hate to take this thread off topic, I am very interested in this laser/rocket deflection.

Was it the laser bolt itself hitting the rocket, or the impact splash that caused the deflection?

I think the laser bolt itself hit the rocket. I was shooting parallel to the floor so it shouldn't have hit anything but the rocket. Gotta try this out sometime with two clients in a private game.

But it might be the deflection works even whith the splash push of the laser.

I'm sure someone can provide a youtube video demonstrating this.

Basically when the rocket gets caught in the blast radius of the laser, it changes course. A few of us played around with this effect after observing it during games and going "wtf just happened???". I originally thought it was a glitch in the game. The laser doesn't have to actually hit the rocket. In fact, a direct hit would likely detonate the rocket. From my understanding, the hit-point level of a rocket is high enough where it won't explode when caught in the blast radius of the laser, whereas other weapons will detonate the rocket if the rocket is caught in their blast radius (electro, hagar, mortar, crylink).

You can experiment with it yourself. have someone shoot a rocket constantly at a wall and you laser the floor under the rocket. The rocket will change course.

  • I noticed this a long time ago lol. I think rocket deflection is cool, but that fact just about every other weapon detonates rockets just pisses me off.

Although it is funny when you nex someone just as they launch a rocket and your nex beam detonates the rocket :D

  • how is that possible? A nex shot has too much damage for a rocket and it doesn't have any blast radius.

  • I concur.

I have stopped the RL coming at me with my nex shot (extreme stroke of luck while waving my nex wildly in duration of turning around).

I might have demo on it but I seriously don't want to spend hours looking through it for the specific moment.

Basically the nex goes through the actual rocket while it's flying and explode it before it reaches it's destination.

  • Heck, one time, I was toting a hagar with a few hundred rounds, and managed to pretty much steamroll some guy with a rocket launcher, knocking all of his shots out of the air.

  • wait....not talking about blowing up a rocket. I'm talking about changing the rocket's trajectory. Deflecting.

4m, if this has been brought up on the forum before, then I haven't seen it. And I still want clarification on your claim about deflecting a rocket with a nex.

    clarification:
could be i just dreamed it. i just have that image in my head. :)
(or maybe the rocket was deflected by a laser or something else, without me realizing it. you may just forget it, considering i have no evidence.)

i'll try to find the other discussion.
Edit: i fear it was on the old forum. :/

  • Some time ago I noticed that rockets also get deflected when shot at a jump pad, but I am probably the only one who didn't know that :? .

Mirio, it is all happening so fast in your video, it would be more informative in slowmotion...

  • I believe that you can't deflect a rocket without blowing it up with a laser direct hit, it has to be the splash damage. In the video it looks like he hits the player with the laser, and the rocket gets deflected from the splash.

  • Hey thx everybody for all the feedback on that rocket deflection. I didn't have time to test it myself during the weekend so I am all impatient to do a lot of rocket defleciton during my next Nexuiz session.

Either I am really noob still or Nexuiz is just so great I keep discovering new things and tricks even after playing for more than half a year.

    Maybe both

  • well, i experimented a bit. what's weird, not only the laser, but also the Electro, Crylink and Hagar can change the direction of a rocket, when fired at somewhere near. Mortar and RocketLauncher would detonate the rockets. i wasn't able to either detonate or deflect the rocket with Nex and only manage once to detonate it with Laser.

considering the differing reports, i assume it has to do with settings.

  • Evidently detonating a rocket with the nex is quite hard to do, normally luck or coincidence if they are lined up perfectly. It is true that electro, crylink, mortar, hagar, laser... just about everything screw with rockets. Very annoying when you have a noob spamming at you and they keep detonating

Any weapon with radius damage cam deflect rockets. mosy otehr then laser usualy detornated it tho, since they do to mutch damage. you cant kill you _own_ rocket with the nex, just otehr ppls.

<Diablo> the nex is a "game modification"
<Diablo> quake1 never had a weapon like that.
<Vordreller> there was no need for anything over 4GB untill Vista came along

  • A direct laser hit is usually too powerful, it makes the rocket explode. Me, Rad Ished and FruitieX have been playing around in slowmo and high speed - low damage lasers, deflecting rockets by hitting walls when they come close to them... It was lots of fun... All my attempts at deflecting a rocket with a direct laser hit made it explode.

It's not the damage that causes the rocket to explode (laser does 35 damage, but a rocket has 50hp), it's the touch event triggered when the laser projectile hits the rocket...
