  • killagrunt, i should warn you that it's not that easy right now to make character models with blender for nexuiz. the smd import scripts are busted and the nexuiz smd export script is a bit flaky when it comes to animations.

if you want to use existing animations you'd need to be able to import one of the character model smd files and use it's skeleton in your new model, but since there don't seem to be any smd import scripts that work with the current version so you'll have to make your own skeleton and all it's own animations.

also, the nexuiz smd export script seems unable to export specific animations so if you want to export an animation to an smd file you'll have to either...
    1. export all of the animations and then hand edit the text of the resulting text file to isolate the relevant animation or...
    2. delete all of the animations except the one you want to export, move it to position 1 then export, reload the blend file and repeat for each animation or...
    3. have a seperate blend file for each animation.

i think this might be due to blender having made some major changes to it's code which have messed up some of the older scripts. this doesn't mean it's impossible to make player characters in blender for nexuiz, but it might be more work than you realise.

    good luck.

  • also. yes, you can make a model from simple shapes. you can make a model as simple as you want. it doesn't even need animations (but it does need an armature).

  • Please, the internet is a vast place- and the AT forum isn't an an on-demand encyclopedia. Do a search for what you want, in the places that make sense (BLENDER WIKI, BLENDER FORUM) then if you have to, ask here.

Over the course of this 3 day search binge on the Blender wiki and forum, which page from your results did you find most interesting?

Also, how did you not find anything on armatures?

  • short answer-
put the mouse over the 3d window, hit space -> add -> armature.

    long answer-
when you add an armature it will appear wherever your 3d cursor is, which could be anywhere, so the first thing you need to do is make sure the 3d cursor is located at your model's centre (the little pink dot). to do this you first need to select your model with the right mouse button. the you need to open up the "snap" menu by hitting shift-s (very useful tools). then select the option "cursor -> selection". this will put the 3d cursor on the your model's centre. you can now add the armature with space -> add -> armature.

the armature will only have one bone, but that's enough for now.

  • Not that I want to feed laziness ... but rather help the off chance a user finds that POORLY TITLED thread while SEARCHING THE FORUMS FIRST, I'd like to contribute this video:

A blender video tutorial on armatures

    http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=GbFvrilssNo

All of his videos are well made.
