This is primarily directed at people that play on Galt's.

Okay, maybe I'm the only one annoyed by this but.. When playing on Galt's and the server is FULL... if you're not playing but are just chatting about God, arguing about his existence, or about the evolution of mankind, can't you AT LEAST GO SPECTATOR? Or better, why not go to IRC?

Don't you know that this server is the most popular one and sometimes it's hard to get a spot?

If you join a team and then do nothing, you just spawn and then chat about anything unrelated to the game, sorry but I'm gonna say it, I think you're being an asshole. It pisses me off that it takes an hour before I can connect and then still have to wait 20 minutes until a spot is free and can actually play. When I see someone not playing and just chatting and I ask him to go spectator because there are people wanting to play (which I don't always do for myself, but for others too), I'm told to "go f*ck yourself and don't read the f*cking chat"....... Yay, that's just great. Also, yes I'm going to read the f*cking chat because sometimes people actually say things related to the game and what is going on, alright? The reason there's a *BEEP* when someone says something, is to warn you that somebody is saying something so you should have a look. If there's a BEEP every second, it's REALLY ANNOYING. Some people can ignore this, hide the chat, remove the beep, w/e, but others are interested, as I said, to read when people are saying stuff about the game.

Also, when there are 4 players (yes, 4) on a single team chatting and not playing, huh... wtf is that? First, you're in the way, second, the rest of your team is probably not having much fun and must feel lonely, and third, well, you suck and I hate you.

For those that actually go spectator when they're chatting, thanks, you're awesome and I love you. You make a lot of BEEPS but at least you're not filling a spot so I forgive you.

Sure, it's just a game it's not to be taken so seriously, I'll be the first to say that, but if you're there to have fun, keep in mind that others are there for that too. Don't ruin it for everyone else.

I'm not saying it's bad to say "hi" and "how are you" and things that will take a minute at max and then you get back to the game, I'm saying take your long conversations somewhere else, PLEASE.

Yeah well I was pissed when I wrote that post, I've calmed down since then. And yes, I know this post won't change anything, it was purely about myself needing to say something.

ai: I don't think it's related to people being Americans, as sometimes about half the players on the server are obviously not NA players, they're from various countries (200+ping) and play on Galt's because it has a lot of people on it (maxplayers is 24) so your comment does nothing other than bash Americans for no reason. I'm not American, so whatever. It's probably not a good idea to keep talking about this subject anyway we all know how it's going to end.

I found my solution for this long ago: no FFA gaming anymore, only if I really can't get any games going by contacting others in IRC (like using the pickup channel). I'm fed up with the difficulties one usually experiences during FFA gameplay. For me, when I play FFA, I do not even listen to the chat beep anymore. People who like to chat with me can as well do this on IRC, which I like more anyway. I only respond occasionally on servers (when people are around that I know already xD).

If I were you, nifrek, I'd try to not care anymore.

However, what I didn't quite understand yet, was that you said that you didn't want to join the game once you were connected. I don't understand why you couldn't just join a team once you are connected (of course by choosing a team that won't destroy the balance of the game).

Galt's uses your mod (probably with most features disabled), with g_maxplayers 20, leaving the 4 remaining ones stuck as spectators. I should have mentioned that for those who don't play there, my complaints probably didn't make any sense

I sometimes can get some good games on that server, it's just a matter of who is there so that annoying players are easier to ignore. Sometimes I want to play right away when I take a break from work and going on Galt's is the easiest way to get a quick game without asking around for people to get a pickup game going.

I wrote a pseudo mute that works as a module for the ninja pack but it works seperately as well. It's simple "conchat 0 5" with the chat.wav set to null.

Galts is very bad with this (as are Euro servers) and the sad truth is nothing can be done.

I could, perhaps, bring the player limit down a bit and remove the spectator spots to try to foster less of a "chatty" atmosphere. The Gulch has almost become its own little community with lots of regulars though, I'm not sure what to go for here.

I agree it has become it's own community but it has taken away from gameplay as well

I don't think there is a real answer to this chat problem, I guess it's just something that comes with the popularity of a place where people meet.

I like this idea, and in the motd maybe put something that says "No random chat" or I guess probably something less "rude", just a hint that would warn people connecting there that it's place to play a bit more seriously. That way if someone whine about too much chat, he will be right and won't be told to fuck off.

I personally do not dislike the spectator slots, it's cool when you just want to watch when you want to play a map. It's just that sometimes it's unfair for the people stuck as spectators while some players are filling spots and chatting/not really playing. Also, most regular players are very respectful and will understand if someone tells then them that they're doing something wrong and will be happy to resolve the problem. So, yeah I don't see what you could personally do about it, I think it's the players responsibility to act fair. Unfortunately, a lot of them don't give a shit. Some people only think about themselves.

There's one other I'd like to mention (also about people only thinking about themselves) while i've got your attention This morning some guy called the same vote 5 times in like 2 minutes because he wanted a map even tho it was denied every time. He was then kicked by vote, he came back and called the vote again and again. Eventually people gave up and voted yes... then someone called -timelimit -1 right at the start of that map and the match ended I see that happen a lot.

Maybe putting a higher waiting time between vote calls by the same player would help?

I disagree about kicking/banning people in general, IMO nexuiz needs more ways to "punish" players. Muting/remove right to vote/remove them from a team and lock them as spectators while the remaining time of the map/etc. That would teach them a lesson a lot more than get kicked then come back just to keep doing the same thing over and over because they KNOW it is annoying everyone.

I actually stand by this. I also want to punish a player more than just kick/ban. Especially remove the ability to vote and mute them would be of great help. Making them a spectator I'm not sure about, but that would help with team-killing on purpose. However, I believe it would be easy to override that, as then that person who got to be a spectator could possibly quit and rejoin and his stats would be reset. However, this may also be the case with the other 'preventing votes and muting' stuff.

While I'm tempted to agree, girth and stupidity don't have much to do with how talkative someone is. On the subject at hand, I don't see anything wrong with a friendly chat as long as it doesn't take too much away from the game, but if you're a 14-year-old arguing about God, shut up and take your pseudo-intellectualistic bullshit somewhere else.

I don't think Galt's Gulch is the best place to go for very serious playing, but at the same time you can't pretend it's a public lounge. I know this is a bit hypocritical, as I've gotten in a fair share of lengthy discussions, but they were usually triggered by levels of blatant stupidity I didn't think possible. I hate the Internet.
