  • This is probably the rarest feature on Computer games nowdays... Sadly. Will there ever be split screen on Nexuiz? Or a mod to enable it?

    Thank you,

  • I may be thinking crazy... but what's from stopping you running nexuiz twice in seperate x sessions in linux? I think the only problem... is input. You'd need some middleware to direct 2 different controllers to the 2 different instances.

  • How would those two instances connect to each other for a game? Also, you would need a very powerful computer to be able to run 2 games at full speed simultaneously, and I don't know how you would make 1 instance use only one half of the screen.l

Via network, just like all other clients? ;)
Either connect to an external server or one client starts a server and the other connects...

Also, you would need a very powerful computer to be able to run 2 games at full speed simultaneously,

dual-core cpus are quite common/cheap atm and i don't think that real split screen would be much faster, since the rendered data remains the same. and you can always reduce details...

and I don't know how you would make 1 instance use only one half of the screen.l

start in windowed mode and set the resolution to half your screen size...

Taking this one step further, both xorg and nexuiz allow for dimension definitions. So you can set your screen to 2 640x1024 or 1280x512 for example. This may require changing the view angle or a worst a custom HUD.

The two controller solution I'd imagine as being as simple as plugging in 2 USB game controllers. One thing I'm unsure about however, is how to direct the singles to the right instance of Nexuiz.

Could you have a separate program with input focus that sends events (simulates key presses) to each window, respectively? I have no idea if it would be responsive enough to be playable, but I can't see that taking too many resources or being too slow. It would basically just act as a switch for incoming events.

    Other thoughts*:
cl_maxidlefps might need to be adjusted as each window would not actually have focus.
A tiling WM would be perfect for this.
Atari could handle split-screen as we saw in the ports thread... any modern computer should be able to as well.

*one of these is not serious... correctly guess which one and killagrunt will give you a prize**
