  • Hi everyone, ...I just wanted to have somewhere for you all to check-in when I release a new soundpack for your perusal. So I figure HERE might be a good place to do it.

I recently made "Tenshihan-V3.1.pk3", which has some improvements to my older sounds, as well as updating the following sounds:

    Rocket_Fire (Sampled from a REAL rocket-launcher)

    Hagar-Fire (and it's explosions)

Nex (Took down the Treble a bit so the RailGun doesn't burn your eardrums out)

Hook (Revamped completely due to seeing the newest graphics which reveal it clearly to be an energy-based tractor-beam.)

Crylink (Dropped the Bass so it doesn't sound like it's always on 'Strength' mode.)

'WeaponPickUp' & 'Weapon_switch' (Now both are quieter so you can actually hear what's going on around you.)

'Hit sound' now sounds more like a 'pre-gibby' sound, rather than playing a 1980's ping-pong video-game.

...And for fun, just to be silly, I added some changes to the picks ups for 'Strength' (A maniacal laugh) and 'Invincibility' now has a reminder for those who played 'Mortal Kombat' in the ole' days...

If you guys don't like those two sounds, your game will default to the originals by just deleting those two files from my soundpack. ((Sound/Misc/"powerup.ogg" & "powerup_shield.ogg"))

I plan on having custom sounds eventually for EVERY player-model, including custom-taunts that YOU the individual requests of me (Yes, that includes the usage of foul-language, ...just make sure you are using headphones so no one hears them aside from Yourself! Hahah)

...Stay tuned on this channel, ...and ALWAYS CHECK MY SIGNATURE FOR UPDATES!

More to come in the following weeks! :)

    Take care everyone!

Yeah - the first version I made sounded like a lightning-strike/sniper-rifle mix, ...and yet later I THOUGHT that using a real rail-gun sound would be cool; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y54aLcC3G74 (at 3:32 minutes in), but it's taken it's toll on my ears....just too damn loud.
Maybe that's the same reason you use the original sound I made? Either way, I decided to re-work the original with about only 30% of the rail-gun left in there, instead of the 99% I was using recently - so now it sounds really nice. ;)

Barfly wrote:Love the sound, hate the hagar

Hahah, yeah - I also find the Hagar to be really horrible at times, ...it can severely lagg everything up because it seems like spamming with explosives (In my opinion). I figured that If I HAVE to use it on some maps, then I want it to at least sound GOOD!
Heh, ..."Hagar the Horrible" ...wasn't that a comic?

  • Its hard to say.. i'm beginning to warmup to the electro and the nexgun sounds but i really dislike the hagar. Also the echo in the rockets and other explosions make it too hard to hear stuff. At least i tried watching a demo with those sounds and had a much harder time telling what was going on from the sounds alone.
Maybe it was because they were new to me, but i think part of it was also because of stuff like the echo.

Hmmn, if you preview the sounds by themselves without the game, you will hear that there is hardly any reverb/echo. The sound of the Rocket-Fire was taken from a real Rocket-Launcher, and the Nex was taken from a real RailGun, ...I hardly used any reverb at all for either.
However, my older Nex-Fire DID have a lot of reverb, which I have since tamed down for the next release, ...I don't think I want to use the REAL rail-gun sound anymore because it's just way too sharp and painful on the ears when heard regularily. (And I LOVE sniping!) ;)
Actually, I've just redone ALL my weapon-sounds - by minimizing the reverb in everything. Nice, short, clean, sound now.

    See my Signature! :)

  • Tenshihan, I think this is a wonderful effort and your sounds are very lively. I noticed there was far too much high frequency in all of them, however (very hard on my ears), and have applied equalization to aggressively/progressively reduce db moving up freq scale. This has not hurt their liveliness and drastically reduced ear fatigue.

If you want to hear some or all of them, let me know where to put them up.

Hi dp, thank you for your post,
Hmmn, which version of my soundpack are you using? Because that doesn't look like the analysis-profile for my Current "Nex_fire"...unless you were referring to the old one I was just discussing here (my recent posts) that was using a real railgun? Because yeah - it WAS hard on my ears as well, so I just fixed that all up. ;)

"I noticed there was far too much high frequency in all of them"

Do you have all of your sound equipment set currently to FLAT? (If you have your treble above normal, that could hurt your ears. I record everything Digitally 'Flat' (High fidelity), but I don't boost the Treble at all.
I would like to hear what you've done though, ...please send me a PM with your email address.

    Cheers! :)

    3.3.

Yes. Actually I use a teensy bit more bass (surround sound headphone w/ LFE).

I didn't think you'd boosted the treble; the shotgun, for instance, sounds spot-on (great sample job, btw). Real sounds have all those natural highs, but when you shoot em through a headphone, there's no air to dampen their impact on the ears; hence, high realism but a lot of fatigue on the ears. I managed to give myself a real headache killing bots for twenty minutes with the shotgun.

I'll listen to them as soon as i get around to.. guess this evening.

In the meantime, would you like to do TWO nexgun sounds? The next release will basicly have two of them. The current model will stay the same, but the 'old' model will make a comeback as the insta-nex (secondary = laser shot not zoom and one shot, one hit, one kill..) which is used in instagib OR if a mapper puts it into a map as a kind of super weapon. and i think i'd LOVE to be able to hear the difference. BTW i guess someone told you but your sounds for the port-o-launch are in already :-)

Sorry for my late reply esteel, (as you know I've had my hands full since the hurricane in Houston), ...all is well now, and YES I will make you guys whatever sounds you need, especially for my fav weapon - the Nex!

Actually, no one told me about my portal-sounds being in there! That's great to hear! :)

I'm curently downloading the latest Nexuiz-build from here:
    http://141.2.16.23/~rpolzer/nexuiz/buil ... NEWEST.zip

Hopefully then I will hear them all!

  • Hi everyone,

Well, i've been at it again all night and all day, and have finally come-up with some new sounds.

Installation: Check my Signature for "Tenshihan-V3.5.pk3", download it, and then just place my soundpack into your "Nexuiz/data" folder. Start-up your game and you're good to go! :)

    -------------------

    Tenshihan-V3.5:

    Release date: Sept 23, 2008

    * ALL NEW CTF and Domination sounds! (Play to hear them!) ;)

    * Gave the power-up 'STRENGTH' some extra OOMPH.

    * Fixed the 'Jump-Pad' sound so it doesn't hurt the ears anymore, and gave it some nice deep resonance.

    * New shotgun sound...clearer, suits the default model better.

    * "Yoda" Announcer clip saying "Did Yoda show you that?" Has been changed to "Amazing". Much respect to Torus for his excellent original work, I just got fed up of hearing that players were mis-understanding what he said, so I simplified it.

    * Footsteps = Are now MONO so you can now pinpoint where your opponents are.

    Still Included:

    * Crylink_fire = Enhanced with resonating electrical fizzleness.

    * Electro_bounce = Now it sounds like a ball of sparkling electrical PLASMA, and NOT a damn huge-ass glass marble.

    * Mortar "Grenade_bounce" = Old heavier sounds put back in. No more clangy 'fork on a tin-can' sound.

    * Mortar "Grenade_fire" = Deeper sound.

    * Hagar_fire = Sharper, clearer sound. No longer distorted.

    * Hook_fire = Updated to sound like the energy-based Tractor-beam it IS.

    * Lasergun_fire = Enhanced the sound, shortened it.

    * LaserImpact = Shorter, less distracting.

    * NexFire = Quieter, dropped the treble so your ears don't bleed anymore.

    * Rocket_Fire = Sampled from a REAL Rocket-Launcher, ...MUCH more aggressive and bolder sound.

    * Rocket_Impact = Mixed from three sources to blow your damn ears.

    * Shotgun_fire = I recorded this shotgun myself at the Gun-Range. (As of V3.4 added some extra effects in afterwards)

    * Uzi_fire = Added a bullet-casing sound at the end of the soundwave.

    * 'Hit' sound now has a combination of my 'pre-gib' and the original (back by popular demand) ..Turned out great. ;)

    Thanks Fisume!

I'm actually trying to finish up all of those in-time for the next Nexuiz-release, ...it's just that I haven't had a chance to get any female-voice-work done for the Femme Nexuiz characters, ...so that's holding me back severely. :/
Also - I have to finish a lot of other sounds still, ...overall i'm ALWAYS busy, ...hopefully soon it will all be done, my friend!

    Take care!

  • Well... I like them for the most part but somewhere along the line, a change I _really_ wanted was lost. I like to know what happened with the flag via a voice, "flag taken", "flag returned", etc.

Some people dislike this and rely on scanning the HUD or ignoring the events entirely. I would really appreciate it if you can bring these back.

GAH!!! Holy Crap -z-, I DID make a version with my voice saying those!! I just didn't release that version because I wasn't sure anyone WANTED to hear that, ...of course, I DO as well because when you are flying around at 120mph, I don't want to look away from center-screen!

I will upload that version for you as well, and will name it: "TenshihanV3.5.1" ;)

  • I like the new sounds overall, the only one I didn't like was the new rocket launcher explosion sound. It has way too much clipping and sounds very distorted. I reverted back to the slapback explosion sound from your first sound pack because I liked that one a lot.

I'm glad you like the rest of my sounds, now to help you out a bit if possible. :)

Explosions always clip slightly at the beginning of the sound. This can't be altered or it takes away from the realism. However there is absolutely NO 'distortion' in My sound. I always have my sound normalized to 88%, but in my newest release, the weapon-sound effects are at only 75%.

There are three possibilities why you are experiencing distortion:
    1) Your pre-amp has the 'Gain-control' turned-up too high and should be reset to default. (Or you have another input problem with your Amplifier in this regard. This may require servicing by a qualified repair technician.)
    2) Your Equalizer has some frequency aspect (usually the Bass) turned up above Flat.
    3) Your headphones or speakers are damaged and are 'rattling' with a loose-piece of the hard epoxy-glue used to seal components that has broken-off inside, causing distortion.

Please check these possible-aspects and also, just to be sure - make sure you are using my latest sound release. "V.3.5.2" (I dropped the sound-level in all weaponry by 2.5 db so you can hear the vocal in CTF.) This does not affect gameplay negatively.

I also recommend to those who are using headphones to turn the music-option down so your ears are not affected negatively by constant input.

I hope this all helps, ...take care and have a great day! :)

But yeah - just to re-iterate, in my latest sound release. "V.3.5.2", ...I dropped the sound-level in all weaponry by 2.5 db so you can hear the vocal in CTF. This does not affect gameplay negatively. Just simply turn up the master volume on your computer. ;)

  • Hi everyone, ...I just made: "Tenshihan-V3.5.3.pk3" as a test so you can hear the new 'Armor' sounds I've made, ...I'm still working on new 'Health' pick-up sounds, but that's a lot harder to do. (Trying to come-up with something original as well as it 'sounding' like 'health' is a really obscure project.) Ever asked yourself: "What DOES picking-up 'health' sound like? ...yeah, weird. :P

Anyway - these armor sounds took a while because believe it or not - using real armor just doesn't sound good enough, ...so I had to use an Anvil and some other assorted metal sounds to get what I wanted. Hopefully you guys will appreciate the hard work it took to make something as 'simple' as Armor. (This took me two days of work to get right.) Now I have to make new health sounds that will 'match' the same kinda feel as the armor.

But first - I need some rest...

Don't forget to get the new sounds via my Signature. ;)

And now, goodnight, ...err, I mean, ...GoodDAY!

  • On the armor pickup, I really like the mega-armor sound. Sounds nice and beefy. Not so big on 5-armor, as it seems mappers tend to put them together in clusters or lines, therefore hitting a bunch sounds like a machine gun.

I'm not a fan of the crylink or laser sounds - I feel the former is too buzzy and the latter doesn't have enough "oomph". I find the laser is lacking a roughness to it, it sounds kind of plush and weak, which I find is rather incongruous with the hit "They're about to explode into a shower of gibs." sound.

The Nex though.. I love the Nex. Too bad it gets cut short by people hastily trying to pull off combos.

Also, I'd consider redoing the capture sounds as they don't match the snazzy new flag taken/returned voice overs.. Only really noticeable when the flag is captured quickly.

Keep up the great work; save these few gripes, I prefer your sound pack to the stock sounds any day.

  • For CTF capture sound:
The "taken" sound is cool, but maybe you could sample the voice of torus'es? That could fit too imho.

Armor sounds: I've found the small pickup very good, easily recogniseable (how's that word spellt anyway?), but for the large... dunno, maybe revert the beginning of that?

Weapon sounds: I agree that the crylink is too heavy, maybe you should leave that electric sound from the end? That may sound too plain, but not it's like a F1 racing-car in your hand :D
All the other sounds are fine, but I still have a two cents: the rocket for me isn't heavy nuff  Imho it doesn't sound like a big, massive explosion, that can do serious damage, some kinda big-bada-bumm! :D (don't get me wrong, imho quake1 has still the best rocket explosion sound evah :D )
