Website for downloading the Nexuiz-NEWEST builds is ..WTF???

Discuss anything to do with Nexuiz here.

  • Does anyone know what happened to this website for downloading the Nexuiz-NEWEST builds? ((http://141.2.16.23/~rpolzer/nexuiz/builds/))

There's only a blasted "torrent" there now, ...I DESPISE those things!

I really liked having a quick-download with a simple click (I could get the newest version in under 5 minutes), instead of having to commit HOURS to using a damn shareware program.

I hate putting excess crap-programs like a bit-torrent installer in my AlienWare NoteBook that I DON'T need.

Are there any OTHER links that I can use to simply download the Newest SVN build?

  • Shareware? You could try Opera.... lol

anyway, you could ask someone to download the torrent and send it to you. Maybe someone already has it.

  • What's wrong with torrents? Just get a decent client like Transmission or µTorrent.

  • Torrents can be used for downloading things other than Nexuiz; it's up to the program owner to put the program to good use. Opera has a BitTorrent client built in, by the way.

  • The whole problem with Torrents is they leave me depending on someone else's resources, dedicated time and graciousness. All of which I can't count on.

Torrents also take HOURS to use and commit my CPU cycles to - when im busy working on Sound.

I need to be able to independantly get what I want - when "I" need it. Not rely on 'others'.

Someone must RE-HOST those "Nexuiz-NEWEST SVN-build" files as an easy HTML link for me to download - or i'm FINISHED here.

Again, I am NOT putting any software into my computer that I DON'T need.

In short - if I cannot get what I need - BY MYSELF when I need it, then I'm done here.

  • I don't see a sense in the way you're acting here. Why don't you directly talk to that "rpolzer" guy? I'm sure he could help you out or at least tell you why there's nothing to find but a torrent. I think you know him very well, don't you? Everybody knows him...

  • Did you TRY the torrent first? I suppose div is original seeder so your speed won't go down but it will only rise up because some seeders might be nearer you (eg. USA) and not in the other side of the world. This is not the first and not the last case when using torrents makes more sense (less load for the server, which div may actually pay for, and quicker sharing).
Blizzard also distributes their content through torrents, Skype's principle is similar (even if they don't admit it), almost every linux distro encourages using torrents too. And torrent client is not a spyware, adware, virus of some sort if you are afraid of it. Like there is ftp protocol, there is bittorrent protocol.
World evolves. Like in fidonet/bbs era people were reluctant to use www, nowadays people associate bittorrent with some sort of warez distribution network and not the protocol.

  • your already depending on someone else's resources when you where downloading that "old way". torrents just allows you to split that dependency over more sources.

having a pile of ppl downloading a package of a few hundred megs every other day put allot of strain on the connection of that server. bandwidth that can be used for better things.

i *really* suggest using svn if you want to keep up to date. this way you only have to download the changes since last time you updated.

    Code: Select all
    svn co http://svn.icculus.org/nexuiz/trunk/

plz don't lash out on the ppl who dedicated their time and resources to this project. if this is really to much for you then do quit. i love your sound work sofar, but i hate shitstorms more, so control your temper pls.

  • Tenshihan, rpolzer is divVerent :P

Btw. if you don't like torrent, I suggest just like tZork did: get an SVN client, and try to compile Nexuiz on your own (that's how the true elites do it ;) ) TortoiseSVN is a very good one, iirc it's free (just like Nexuiz), and I remember it was a great tool when I've had Windows.
Give that a shot, and think about it: it's _me_ who recommends it :) .

  • Not to mention that torrenting files greatly minimises the strain on a server, as the actual files are not hosted. Bandwidth isn't free.

I don't think you understand that running uTorrent and downloading a file uses a negligible amount of your own system's resources. Having a bit of experience in Digital Performer, I can say with confidence that sound work will not be affected.

As a quick addition, I don't think having a 263k client file on your computer--your AlienWare notebook, excuse me--is going to do any harm.

  • He doesn't need all nexuiz source, just the changes. And the changes are qc files which accounts to several kbs and his music, which he already has. That's why it is best to use svn, cause you download what has changed (several mbs) and not the whole 300mb each time.

  • I don't WANT to quit guys, ...that's not what I was saying at all.

I can't explain it any more than saying; 'Updating your SVN client' must be obviously easy for people who can read so easily, and are using Linux. (I'm using WinXP home edition - customized specifically for my Notebook, no extra bullshit whatsoever, my machine is NOT Bill Gates's f*cktoy.)

A friendly reminder: My dyslexia is SEVERE. (There are varying levels of it, but mine is the worst. I also have dyscalculia - meaning I can't do math either - at ALL.)

It's not 'stupidity' or ignorance either, ...You would have to be ME to fully understand.

Learning to use any new software program is a BIG hassle for me.

PS: this note took me 15 minutes to write. :/

I've re-read these posts a few times now trying to understand.

You do know that you're participating in an open source project, right?

edit: ah, just read the followup posts. Nevermind :-)

  • Due to the tiny amount of help I get from this community, I decided to spend less resources on it either. So currently it's just bandwidth limited torrents (and you only get higher bandwidth if someone seeds). When I find out how to bandwidth limit per IP with apache, there'll be http downloads again.

Tenshihan, you are one of the few who actually contribute - I will tell you privately a full speed download location when I made the next build. The normal folks will be limited to slow downloads or torrents, to lag my Nexuiz server less. Speaking of which, do you have an IRC client? If yes, can you go to anynet, and message me (nickname there: div0)?
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.
