  • I noticed since several months you didn't enjoy working on this project, but you stayed and keep adding features (like the team radar to just name one) or bugfixes to get a new nexuiz version released in good condition with fun and balanced gameplay. And unfortunately you almost only received harsh criticisms from the new active players base, whereas your decisions have always been positive, like for the 2.4.x release, adding a detonate delay for the rl or counting weapon refire with individual timer. Big thanks for your huge contribution, keep in mind under your management player base doubled in 2 years, so you are just victim of your success. :)

About nexuiz immediate future, I think 2.5 is almost ready, it need some testing to find the last obvious bugs. Experimentations have been made about score systems, items, etc., now it's time to take decision and set good default values. I've a complete confidence on divVerent's judgment to still make nexuiz 2.5 a fun experience for new and experimented players.

After 2.5, I'm agree with torus, the code base is solid, but the artistic contents hasn't evolved as fast. Player models are 4 years olds, same for some ammo items, so it seem a good start to focus on this aspect already begin by the highly unexpected and valuable Tenshihan's sound pack. And it seem there are some good modelers in the community. ;) On the code side, logic wants more objects to be managed client side like gibs, projectiles, players, etc. but that will be more difficult without an experimented coder. Also that will be the moment to see what all the complaining (and often arrogant) people can bring to the game except criticizes, but I don't expect anything serious from them...

  • OMFG NOEZ!!1

/me has gone all emo now

Thanks for all the work you put into Nexuiz, sorry to hear that you didn't have as much fun developing it has we've had playing it. I hope that the community can sustain the development and general upkeep of the project

Though I must say, the first set of bullet points are quickly solved by liberal use of the banhammer, because deliberate insults, especially as a reply to contributions to the community, and definitely promoting the use of illegal drugs are quite worthy of a ban IMHO. Say, have you ever tested the 3kV isolation rating of most people's ethernet ports? With an RJ45 to BS1363 cable?

  • Let me first say: Thank you very much for your work, divVerent!

Actually I am (or was) planning to follow div's call for developers and already have been in contact with him. I didn't want to hang it out in public too early, because I know that I will have steep learning curve. Or rather a long one, since I don't have as much time for spending on Nexuiz development as I would like to have. I surely will never be able to invest as much committment as divVerent .

With divVerent leaving the project, tZork thinking about leaving and looking at the list of reasons why div left I have to reconsider my decision. So far the Nexuiz development team, as much as the community, have consisted of affable people, at least that is my impression. As much as div I'm not interested in a mud fight. It's my spare time that I would invest and I want to enjoy what I'm doing in my spare time.

I do not agree that a "void to fill in by new people" is necessary or even good. AFAIK, it has been possible for new developers to join the team all the time, if there were any who wanted to.

So, where is the Nexuiz development team heading now? Can we expect a consolidation and rely on tZork's banhammer or can I expect the social situation around the development to get worse? Is it worthwhile for me to learn QuakeC and take a loooong bath in the Nexuiz code base?

PS: currently I'm on vacation 8), so I can relax a bit before taking up the challenge

I guess everything's gonna go bad from now on (worse than it is already).

Sorry for being that pessimistic, but that's the way I feel actually. More and more of the long-established great personalities the community once had are withdrawing one or the other way. Now the king himself left. Well, I can't change. Farewell div. I always enjoyed the moments we were in contact, playing or chatting. And I'll always love you ;)

  • Well, I'll stay in PB, so PB needs still will see code... so you sure still can expect all sorts of fun. I however will no longer code for any of the requests posted here, on IRC, or sent to me in person.

If you want a feature, or a bug fixed - do it on your own.

If you actively contribute and already have got a part done, ask me on IRC if you need help for the rest. I can tell you a lot about how the engine and QC work.

Oh, and someone please help terencehill with his engine patch. He knows how to do it, and gets forward - but he needs help to get done faster, it is quite much work. I had told him what is left.
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

Thanks divVerent for your hard work. I'm looking forward to the future fun times we will have, having you in the PB clan has already been a blast so far.

It will be interesting to see what will come of Nexuiz now. Even if Nexuiz would freeze as is now I would still play it for a long time to come and I am sure others would too.

  • Somehow I have seen this coming.

Div, I think from all the posts on this thread it is easy to realize how much your efforts have been, and are, appreciated by the Nexuiz community. So how can I put it? I think you did an awesome job and most probably will do on what you do next. From what I read on this forum, I do not only like the work you did but also the way you did it, and what it revealed from you as a person.

So a huge thank you for doing all this work for Nexuiz! It is sad to see you go, but I, too, understand and support your decision.
<Community>: Why was the name "Nexuiz" licensed to IllFonic in a way that allows IllFonic to use the name without any suffix or subtitle for a commercial console game?

  • No, it won't freeze. Do you know any significant open source thing which froze without being resurrected in one or another way?

nvu - freeze -> resurrected as kompozer
    ffdshow - freeze -> resurrected
sodipodi -> freeze -> became inkscape
xmms -> supposed freeze -> BMP -> audacious and BMPx

  • Thank you divverent for all the energies that you invested in Nexuiz. I am confident that a new release will bring a wave of new people attention to Nexuiz and certainly a good load of them will be respectfull , helpfull and friendly persons. I myself got into nexuiz when 2.4 was released and in my 26 years of living this is the only video game that i have stick to for more than a couple of weeks. this is mostly due to the great people like you that are part of this community, and also the fact that this game is awesome :D

please excuse my poor english, i am french :P

Urmel of all the people you we're the one to nail it!, i'd like to thank div0 as well even if he did have a hand in me leaving the community, but scratch that i don't really care about it anymore. div0 you did the most awesome work here ever seen on a free game project. Period! if only some of the other projects out there could adhere to you're high standard!

  • Wow, that's really terrible to hear.

divVerent your work on Nexuiz is certainly not without applause on these forums, in IRC, and evident in the fact that so many people enjoy the fruits of your labour daily. So I can't say much more than has already been said, but I do hope you see, beyond all the negativity, how many more positive aspects your work has had. Sadly, people don't say anything unless something is wrong; and opinions -- particularly on the internet -- are a dime a dozen. So it goes, then, that negativity tends to outweigh the silent majority of people who are truly thankful.

I am thankful for all you've done. And I do hope you continue to be a driving force in Nexuiz -- whether in the background or not -- in the long term. If nothing else, you've much to teach, and many are eager to learn. Good luck, though I'm positive luck will have nothing to do with it, in all your current and future endeavours.

  • Well, let's put it this way. I can come back and become a productive coder again (currently all I do is look at submitted patches from people who actually DO something, and commit them after fixing minor issues).

However, I do NOT want this "king" role back. It is what annoyed me most, and I never really wanted it (it just "fell" onto me because of Vermeulen becoming inactive with Nexuiz, and SavageX, who "on paper" has this role, not having the time for it - for which I don't blame him). I do not want to deal with all the complaints about every single change. I do not want to deal with people asking me about every single problem they have (and in the end it's their graphics driver anyway).

And I do NOT want to be the only active coder.

So basically, it's your task to fix this community if you want me back as an active coder.

Tenshihan, please finish your sound pack anyway - I will commit it when done. If you need minor code changes, tell me.

As for that particle effect, talk to Morphed, he's doing the effects (and it still does look pink and not orange to me).
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

That sounds fair to me! I think if the community put some effort into it, we could help find more developers.

So, Nexuiz Community, let's discuss ways to attract more developers to Nexuiz. Perhaps a new thread is needed for this.

  • Div, I am sorry to hear that you feel that way... You've been great to this community. I think for everyone in this community that has a part of it has undergone some stress. It may just be that time of the year when exams are starting to start and people are cramming... I hope that in this case, you can come back in time after having a break from the development team.

I know I'm horrid at scripting, but I'll attempt to help out the community, I don't think one single persons effort could amount to the work div does for us. I do hope to see you back as a dev soon!

Most importantly, thank you for the effort you have put in, making this whole thing possible, I don't think nexuiz would have been made possible if it weren't for you.

  • Thanks for all your hard work and dedication to the project, div0. Without you, Nexuiz wouldn't be the same game that it is now, and I've played every build since the early alpha ones - your work has been by far the greatest contribution to the project since its release. It's great to know that there are people in the online community who are willing to dedicate themselves to a free project, and to the rest of the community.

  • Hi div,

I want to express my deep sadness about your decision:
    But: I understand your reasons.

For your future projects, work and life I send you the best wishes.

If I had the ability (and time) to help with development, I would be glad to help - but ... well none of them is available for me (especially not the necessary coding skills).

But: I'm a professional systems administrator (mostly linux). If I can help with that, I would love to.

    Regards,

  • Damn.. can't believe I didn't see this topic earlier :? Anyway since it's been revived I guess I can say a few things even if a few months have passed since this was discussed.

I'm not exaggerating when I say Nexuiz is one of the very best free shooters out there. From what I seen Div has gotten all of it started together with other devs, and has put effort to make this game of an incredible quality for something non-commercial and open source which I never thought I'd see in a free game. It would be totally sad to see him go after all this time and progress though I still see Div committing to SVN daily so I hope things have gotten better since last time.

I should probably apologize to Div here since I was one of the people who bugged him about several things and complained about some of the recent changes in the game (sorry to esteel as well for bugging him with the mod button thing so much :D ). I didn't know the situation was so bad and everything started going downhill so much around here.

About the community not being as nice as before: As it has a lot of features and is very well made, this game is becoming more popular over the time and attracting users from all over the place. As the community grows it becomes impossible to have everyone be nice and have a warm and welcoming atmosphere on public servers, since all kinds of people are joining now. Its the price that must be payed for being popular sooner or later. Never the less we can still make our own servers for the IRC community and the nice people so not all is lost :)

Onto wanting to leave because of the sadness / stress: As I said in another topic, I think one of the most important things is that no one does anything while feeling forced to. It's not necessary that someone develops daily if they don't feel like it or are not feeling well sometime. It's good to take a brake for a few days, weeks or months if you need to, or just do something when you feel like it only. As for the lack of developers I still make patches and plan on continuing to even if I'm not so active. I think it's best if we all take everything easily and with time :)

  • divVerent -- You will be missed...

I have been in and out of here "from the start" (this is not true) And I have not seen so mush of the hateful attitudes... may be because I am only in and out now and then...

But if it is true, then it is the suxxors, this game is BY the Community For the Community, and if parts of the Community is dushe-bags then they need to leave.

The games need to learn to respect the devs, admins and each other, how are doing this on there free time, with no pay, except for the pride they truly disserv.

This games is the epiphany of team work, community, and love.... and for some idiots to wreck it is not exeptibul...

/me wishes divVerent a happy life, W/O the stress of Alientrap.
