Limit Electro Ball spam

Would it be good to limit the amount of electro balls that can come out when someone holds the right mouse button down?

Good idea.

Not needed. Electro spam isn't a problem.

Electro spam is a problem, but I don't think this is the solution.

  • Too many people spam a whole map (in DM, especially) with the electro balls. A lot of noobs do the same thing in CTF within their own base. It's quite obnoxious. Some people do this just to mess with others.

I don't see any usefulness in the game to allowing electro balls to continuously flow out without limit. Secondary mortar doesn't have the same problem because it's secondary fire rate is slower. What if electro balls could only come out, say, 5 at a time? Then you have to wait a second for it to recharge.

I dunno the exact timing, but it appears as if it takes about one second to shoot out 5 electro balls. What if you could only shoot 5 balls within 2 seconds? Then you wouldn't be able to shoot them constantly.

Also, you have to release the right mouse button and press it again to shoot out more balls.

It seems as though this timing would not get in the way of doing electro combos. If I shoot 2 electro balls out and fire the primary, and then do it again, that takes about 2 seconds, so my "electro ball" limit resets to 5 and I can keep going. I would be able to continue doing electro combos without any hesitation. But this would prevent me from holding down the right mouse button and flooding a room with electro balls.

Perhaps it could be a cvar setting so people can switch it back if they are wanting to do some explosion tricks for a demo or something.

  • In halo the alien weapons would overheat. I think the weapons that require cells in Nexuiz should exhibit similar behavior.

  • This is a good idea for servers with less experienced players that just spam randomly hoping to kill something. But I do not have any problem with the current system on more experienced servers. It also may ruin somethings that I like about the electro

    - allowing me to spam a hallway in a 1v1
    - create large damage to a group of closely packed people.

I usually do shoot two electro balls and then ignite if I want to use the electro quick.I also also use 3-6 electro balls to do massive damage. Like many problems its more of a problem with less experienced players then in the more advanced players.

Sounds like a good idea for crylink.

  • I think the secondary fire rate has to be slower, if nothing else. It's possible to argue against this in the name of defence but based on experience, it's generally considered to be more detrimental than beneficial.

  • Same should go for hagar. Cvar would probably be no problem, but some sane value is required. How should overheat be displayed?

  • Nope, hagar is fine the way it is imho. And the electro too.
iirc there was a version, (1.0?) when the electro has fired 3 blobs at once, with a much slower refire rate (ever wondered why does the electro 3 have barrels? ;) )

  • i think it is perfect like it is now. most of the time when an inexperience player is abusing this, i can manage to kill him with is own balls by firing a primary electro shot at them.

  • Generally I just wait until the noob is standing in the middle of them then detonate a rocket at the edge or just laser a ball. Its quite funny.
Possibly not the worst mapper in the world.

  • I think that is ignoring the problem though. In CTF, they end up flooding the base with electro balls and then there is nothing you can do about it except leave the base or jump to a higher level. You can't just shoot and detonate the balls, because you will kill yourself.

I just think limiting the shots to 5 at a time would be enough to still allow the Electro to be used to build a big explosion, but not enough to fill an entire room.

  • I like -z-'s suggestion. Have the weapon overheat. Shoot too many, overheats, then you need to wait a cooldown period before you can shoot at all.

  • doku, my comment was not refering to ctf , forgot to mention it. i dont play enought ctf to know if its good or if it should be limited to 5. but from what i understand you are refering to public ctf, i do think that experienced players should not interfer too much on the gameplay of public ctf server since those server are meant to be fun for begginner players and i think that super spamming is pretty fun when u start playing :)

of course, a player that does that on a server that is stated as not for noob, like the phoenix one, should be warn once that this is a nuisance to his own team and than be kicked if he continues to do it.

  • Or at least it could spam like this, but after the 4-5th ball, the reload time should increase in a drastical way.

It doesn't seem like an overheating weapon to me. To me it would seem more like a plasma accumulating thing. The plasma is loaded from the ammo tank into a balling process which only has a certain volume and refills slower than the use of ammo.

Whichever way, it would need some kind of readiness indication.

  • Isn't the FP weapon models are already animated?
They pull back when you fire it, but I haven't seen any reloads or any other FP animations in the video though, but I haven't got the game yet, so I'm going off the video...

But the game could make it so the guns pull back with out animations, but I wouldn't really know, I didn't make the engine.

  • Pullback is not an animated weapon (reloading, pulsing, etc..)

  • Do you mean the pull back is not an animation?
But reloading and things like that have to be, unless you don't see them on screen when they reload, I wouldn't know till I download it.
