A "puppy" version of this?

  • Can i request a "puppy" version of Nexuiz? You know, like really low res textures, low poly models and all that stuff for smallest size and better performance. I want to take Nexuiz to our school, but there is a limit of what you can have on your private hard disk. :/

Hope it isn't too much, thank you :P.

That aside, there is no such version.

    True.

Though, why don't you just put it on a USB? They just need to open the folder then open the game and take it out, the game still works... Then you can share it around like that..

  • There was a MiniNex released previously by a former member of this forum. It's not been updated since about Nexuiz 2.0.

It is easily possible to reduce the size of Nexuiz by deleting, resizing, recompressing files. Have a search for MiniNex on the forum and it'll show you some ideas.

I do not see this as being a bad idea at all. If anything there is a greater need for a smaller packaged Nexuiz now than ever. A repackaged Nexuiz would work better on netbooks. This however is not really something that should be done officially by Alientrap I think. If the communities around the netbooks (ie. eeeuser) want to have package repositories set up for tuned packages, a smaller version of Nexuiz would be so much better, we can tell them how to do this.

  • If this is what i hope it is, school just got WAY more awesome :D

    Edit:

If you can remove sounds to make it take less space that would be the best!

  • One way to "lighten" Nexoooiz is to reduce it's rendering settings as described here: http://www.forums.alientrap.local/viewtopic.php?t=4049

Then, for 1980s-tastic tronalicious arcadeorific graphicspam from the 256colour era you can:

  • i'd like to squeeze it even further, but my resources are limited. For example, the maps or models could be optimized - something i would have to learn from scratch.

Also, i don't know much about compression techniques. Dunno how much can be done there, like, compressing each folder, if that would work at all with Nexuiz.

Changing content I'm not so sure about. It means the game is no longer OK for competition use.

If you want to make a Windows only download, it's probably best to go for a self extracting SFX archive. 7-zip can do this.

For PK3 file compression and other tips on making things small, see this thread:

  • Competitive use is out of question, of course.... or is it?

The goal is the smallest playable state. i only know kkrieger in that category.

kkrieger doesn't count, really. It would be impossible to get it down under a megabyte.

I would imagine you could get it down to 25-30 MB, but what's the point? Why not just pick up a 1GB USB drive, you can get one for like 8 dollars.

They'll be smaller download size, less disk footprint for netbooks that have small storage, it'll load quicker with smaller data files and it may run quicker.

  • Hey guys, is the files with nexuiz-linux as a start for Linux? Or are they important files? Maybe if you removed all OS support than Windows, it might get smaller...

I might be wrong, but it's just because i fail at everything programming related.

Also, a little offtopic question: My friend downloaded Nexuiz on his Linux, AFAIK Linux should be able to play Nexuiz natively, but we can't find out how to start it without Wine. How do you do that?

  • 4m, how did you edit all the files etc without getting the checkered graphics? When ever I edit anything in the data folder the graphics go bad..

  • Most likely because you somehow have not got the file structure within the .pk3 files right. Check it.

  • IMPORTANT NOTICE!

The "str0021.ogg" sound file is from the game "Alien: Resurrection".
Anything else is (or should be) from Nexuiz itself or from the Nexuiz forum.
The other cdtracks (2b2 and brue_nexuiz) are from Mussy and from bRue, respectively.
If you find anything else, let me (and others) know by replying here.

    @Shaggy:
If it's not the folder structure, then it might be your graphics editor.
i usually use Gimp for graphics and on Windows i also use Irfanview for batch-processing. (modifying lots of files at once)

Just to be sure: Are we talking about something included in official Nexuiz or some 3rd-party modification?

  • Official Nexuiz has no str0021.ogg
    1. Open Notepad
    2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
    3. Save
    4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

  • Exactually. It's in DSN. It was in my archive, so i used it as a placeholder and forgot about it.
    Sorry, for the confusion.
